........in order to stop unconstitutional power grab?
Is maintaining that DoJ tradition worth a full-blown authoritarian takeover?
(Once an authoritarian takeover happens, the evidence will never see the light of day.)
Isn't it true that silence about criminal investigation ALSO affects an election??

(13,571 posts)I've heard legal experts deny that it is law, and call it simply tradition.

(7,077 posts)A Hail Mary from Mueller that actively advances efforts to depose or remove the president before the election would destabilize, rather than strengthen, American democratic resilience.
A primary rule of any investigation is not to do anything to unwittingly assist the subject in their conspiracy.

(6,709 posts)But if you are saying that Comey listens to / heeds the advice of TruePundit, Erik Prince or Giuliani I beg to differ. Comey is, by his lights, the most moral man in DC, self-righteous and priggish. I'm sure he thought he was doing the Right Thing.

(13,571 posts)That's the premise of my question. If Trump demonstrates that he's about to seize power through acts or threats that are not constitutional, that's not peaceful. One might argue even that inciting violence or collaborating with a foreign power to affect an election are not peaceful in terms of the understanding of "peaceful transition."
Not releasing the truth is more damaging than releasing it would be, when the crisis is existential.

(7,077 posts)A rupture that throws our elections into disarray is the precondition for major unrest.
Preserving the Republic is more important to Mueller than removing a criminal president.
investigating, detailing and prosecuting the crimes of that criminal president might accomplish the latter, but it is a prerequisite to accomplishing the former.

(7,814 posts)compromised (or both) does he inform congressional leaders? Or does he assume congressional leaders should have the same info because of their own investigations? Does he go public? When?
There is both a legal angle and a political angle to this. Does Mueller stick strictly to the legal approach, which could take longer and over which he may not have total control? Does he do more than simply report to Rosenstein (or his replacement) all the info he has which doesn't lead to a strong indictment but which might influence the political pursuit of justice?
Does he stay in his lane or put the good of the country ahead of norms?
Does he become part of a super insider group that negotiates a peaceful transition rather than exposing information that shows we've been duped, been corrupted, that shows our election system is and has been unreliable?
This is of utmost importance....COULD be the biggest/worst political scandal in US history. COULD involve the highest of crimes. COULD be the story of the century. COULD represent a serious threat.
I doubt he's thinking about the midterms. Much bigger issues and questions await.
