Amnesty International - Update on the Migrant Caravan:

Dear Amnesty International Local Groups,

We wanted to take the opportunity to update you on the caravan of migrants that is travelling through Latin America. This is an update, so please stay tuned as we will be sharing more information with you as this story unfolds. In the meantime, if you are planning any local actions around this, please let us know!

Here’s what we know:

The caravan started Oct 14th from Honduras. Advocates think it started as something informal but considering the scale at present, they think that’s indicative of the conditions that migrants are facing. AI researchers are on the ground to monitor the situation. Right now, an AI delegation is with the caravan of people – including thousands of families and kids – who have crossed into Mexico in the last week to escape violent and dangerous conditions in Honduras and other Central American countries and to rebuild their lives in safety.

At least 1,000 of these people have requested asylum in Mexico, and as a result are being held in detention while they await the outcome of their claims. The remainder of the caravan is making its way north. Our colleagues are live-tweeting what they’re seeing. Check @amnestyusa for updates.

At the same time, AIUSA has just gained access to a tent camp where kids are being held. It’s called Tornillo, near El Paso. AIUSA’s Executive Director and US-based researchers will be headed there tonight/tomorrow to see what’s happening and help get our perspective out.

Here's what you can do:

The people in the caravan are seeking protection, and we can support them. The Trump administration has previously torn kids from their parents when they arrive at the border. Now, the Trump administration wants to keep them together – jailed in family detention.

That’s why, as our supporters watch news about the caravan and hear the ugly, race-baiting remarks made by Administration officials about the people in that caravan, we want them to take action.

Write a comment on the Trump administration’s proposal to detain parents and kids indefinitely. It’s just like the fight over Net Neutrality – if we flood the government with comments, they have to consider them. Right now, we have about 14k comments from AIUSA; our goal is 50,000.
