Specific details about the bombs, including solid confirmation that they could even explode, has been hard to come by.

IMHO, it's likely law enforcement is keeping the details hidden to make it easier to find the culprit(s). They may not yet want to let on what they already know.

3. They have digital timers, which seems odd for mail bombs,

but a bomb expert on TV just now is saying the timer is probably a safe-arm switch that was intended to keep the bomb from detonating for a period of time while the bomber was handling it. The triggering mechanism might have been the opening of the package, which is why none of them went off (one does seem to have been opened and photographed by law enforcement).

4. Interesting. So that kind of refutes what people were saying that the perpetrator

didn't really intend to harm the addressed people (because they would know these people had the SS or mail staff to handle the package first).

6. The TV talking heads, at least, now seem to be pretty definite that these were real bombs

that were intended to explode and injure or kill people. It's very possible that many people don't know that mail sent to people like the Obamas and the Clintons is still screened even though they are no longer in office.
