'This is how Donald Trump stays president for four more years'

Wary that Big Tech is biased against the right and clamping down on political content, the president's reelection team is making other plans.

Donald Trump often claims Facebook and Google are "rigged” to favor the political left. Now he’s building a 2020 campaign infrastructure that can circumvent them.

The emerging tech strategy, according to four officials involved in Trump’s reelection campaign, will reduce its reliance on Big Tech platforms — which were the dominant messaging channels in 2016 — to get the president's message out. The president’s team instead is planning to go around the platforms as much as possible and reach supporters directly, making use of old-school text messaging.

The direct-to-consumer, mobile-first campaign reflects the feeling among conservatives that Silicon Valley firms are overly sympathetic to Democrats and the fact that some platforms, like Facebook, are stanching the flow of political content.

“In 2016, the campaign didn’t have the bandwidth to scale across many, many channels," said a person familiar with the reelection campaign, who requested anonymity to speak candidly about the team's approach. “This led to extra focus on Facebook. It worked, but I’d suspect in 2020, the campaign will expand and scale across several unique channels.”

Some people involved with Trump's reelection effort see the 2016 campaign’s dependence on Facebook as a weakness necessitated by Hillary Clinton’s money advantage and the hasty tape-and-glue assemblage of the Trump and Republican National Committee squads. With four years of lead time and a robust fundraising operation that already has brought in more than $100 million before any high-profile Democrat has entered the race, the Trump 2020 campaign is looking to press its digital advantage.

Social media websites have rules regarding hate speech. Conservatives don't read these rules and repeatedly break them because they're hateful dicks. That is it. Hate generally has a conservative bias to it.

Here's what I've learned from similar experiences with Trumpsters. Arguing with them, reasoning with them, showing them proof, directing them to web sites where they can learn for themselves -- all of that is futile. It's a pointless exercise that only results in more frustration. A big waste of my time.

They don't want to know the truth. I have thought about them for a very long time. What motivates and drives them? Why are they so belligerantly stupid? From my Buddhist perspective, what I see are deeply unhappy people, who blame everyone, anyone for the pain of their miserable lives. Any rationale, any conspiracy theory, is good enough to assign blame to the "other" for their suffering and unhappiness. It never occurs to them that they have the power to adopt a different point of view that might result in having some power over their lives. They are drowning in dark dark delusions of hate and fear. Then Trump comes along and gives them the license to hate and take joy in breaking and trampling "the system" that keeps them powerless.

There's a lot that I would like to say to them. But it wouldn't do any good, because they don't want to hear it. I've concluded that the only thing that we can do to reach them is to improve their lives and raise them up, along with everyone else who will get raised up with a Dem agenda. Provide affordable healthcare, raise the minimum wage nation-wide, make college affordable and improve public schools, fund infrastructure projects nation-wide, end stupid tariffs that raise the cost of food and consumer goods, support unions, restore the safety net by raises taxes on the rich, end gerry-mandering and voter suppression, fund affordable child care, etc etc.
