German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Sunday said she supports an end to weapons exports to Saudi Arabia in wake of the killing of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.
I agree with all those who say that the already limited arms exports ... cant take place in the situation were currently in," Merkel told reporters in Berlin, according to the Associated Press.
Merkel also said Germany will consider additional "reactions" to Khashoggi's death, the AP reported.
Khashoggi, a columnist for The Washington Post, died inside the Saudi consulate in Istanbul earlier this month in a suspected murder.

(54,444 posts)Poor Angela Merkel--every time she takes a courageous stand, she gets hell for it.
She supported nuclear power until Fukushima, when she said it has been proven that the risks are too great. Germany has a large and healthy arms industry. They will not take kindly to such words coming from a conservative chancellor. The left (a dwindling factor here, though the German Center is close to being left of our left) will praise her words, as will the Greens, who have been the de facto mainstream left here. The Greens just had a huge surge in conservative Bavaria in the state election there last Sunday. This escaped the attention of exactly nobody here.

(9,350 posts)Yet again Angela Merkel comes out looking like the true leader of the free world. This is how a leader should respond to Saudi Arabia's recent actions. Donald Trump could have lead and asked all of the countries of the world that do arms business with Saudi Arabia to end those deals. Likely, if he wanted to, Trump could have tried to apply pressure on countries around the world to get them to deal quickly and harshly with Saudi Arabia.
