His father was a surgeon. And a survivor. I think at the table, his father is revered.
Cohen wanted to do well....but perhaps wasn't naturally gifted - or adept in school. He was accepted to the worst (?wasn't it?) law school in the country. Not the most promising start if he wanted to someday take his seat, at the head of the shabbos table.
So, I think Cohen tried - in his own way - to find a path to 'success.' For a long time, it 'looked' good from the outside.
But when it crashed down, he couldn't spin it to his family - and certainly not his father (remember, his father urged him to come clean - and said that he didn't survive the Holocaust to have his name sullied like this).
I think his son heard that - and was chastened. He's been a bad guy, though I see him more of a flunky, really - with a 2-bit law degree. The saving grace of Cohen is that he has a few strengths, and I think most of them center around his family - not just his father, but his marriage (he's kept that for 20 years). He hasn't had many values in his career - but he seems to have family.
And that's a strength.
