(9,897 posts)This is going to seem quaint once the climate really starts spiralling out of control and growing food in many areas becomes impossible. These people are desperate to flee repression but they were not all on the brink of starvation...in coming years, that will no longer be the case.
So many have no idea what climate change means !!!!!!

(11,744 posts)I have scoured the internet for other sources but I don't see anything. Can you link to show them "breaking through" the border.
I have read that most have stopped, some have turned back, and that Mexico is granting visas, though they will only process 100 per day.
It is ALWAYS tragic when people think that leaving EVERYTHING and EVERYONE they know is the only option. The problem needs to be addressed at the source. Part of the source, a very big part of the source is American pressure on exploitative labor practices and resource demands on those countries in Central America. From drugs, to minerals, to corporations moving jobs in order to pay slave wages, the US has a hand in creating the conditions that send people to us.
Not to mention that we have been actively messing in the political affairs of these countries since we became a nation.

(11,744 posts)It is sad and maddening. Those poor people are already being forced to choose their safety or their homes, then to be treated as criminals. No one EVER talks about WHY they are leaving their homes! Sure the news talks about gangs, drugs, poverty, etc... but WHAT are the conditions that bring those things about? Corporate capitalism and the corruption it breeds.

(135,861 posts)Arriving on the Mexican side of a border bridge, they were met by a phalanx of police with riot shields. About 50 managed to push their way through before officers unleashed pepper spray and the rest retreated.
The gates were closed again, and a federal police officer used a loudspeaker to address the masses, saying, "We need you to stop the aggression."
Waving Honduran flags and carrying umbrellas to protect against the sun, the migrants arrived earlier at the Guatemalan side of the muddy Suchiate River that divides the country from Mexico, noisily demanding they be let in.
