I keep hearing Dems say that Pence would be just as bad as the moron but I doubt that. First, he wouldn't have Jared and the same "advisers". Also, would Pence really be as indifferent toward murdered journalists? Of course he would be a greedy, selfish, corrupt hypocrite like all the GOP are, but would he be such a sincerely evil criminal?

(209 posts)He seems to be just as evil...only more sneaky about it.

(16,334 posts)There would probably be more photo ops with Pence and family going to and from church. He would probably have put pastors in the positions that Trump put his family members in. His speeches would be smarmy with feel good Republican back scratching sessions.
We would really dislike him but I don't think we'd be as disgusted with him in the way we are with the current complete idiot.

(52,277 posts)He probably wouldn't be pressing tariffs and probably wouldn't be quite as xenophobic. And he wouldn't likely be grifting on Donnie's scale.
But he'd be more anti-gay. and more anti-woman, if you can imagine that.
He'd be doing the same thing as far as tax heist, appointing right-wing judges, and deregulating goes.
The one possible silver lining of Donnie is that he's so obvious it may be easier to reject. Pence would be more conventional and thus harder to reject.

(24,422 posts)Pence is more milquetoast right-wing Republican and puts people to sleep. He'd probably be able to easily sleepwalk through a couple terms as POTUS. Trump gets people's attention, is getting people to be more energized to vote in the upcoming midterms and, hopefully, in 2020 as well.

(48,955 posts)that I disliked him as Governor.
But I don't think he would blow up NATO or the G7.
I do think he'd keep trying to sneak in far right religious right agenda items.
I also think he'd have pulled out of the Paris Agreement and TPPT.
I don't think the level of full throttle corruption throughout the cabinet would be nearly as bad.
In short - he'd be a crappy president, but I don't think we would be having nightmares that the 200+ experiment in Democracy might be coming to an end.

(90,755 posts)I hear he was a terrible governor in many respects, but others will have to speak to the details. Beyond that, Paul Manafort selected Pence to be VP, and I surely would like to know why.
Oh, and fanatical Fundamentalists believe that God wants Pence to be president, and Trump's very election and probable impeachment are God's way of making that happen.
Draw your own conclusions from this.

(24,422 posts)I thought that, by him joining up with Trump, he'd be finished forever, politically. Oh how wrong I was.

(115,783 posts)He seems to have better manners than Trump (but then, doesn't everybody?) and I doubt he'd be tweeting incoherent insults to opponents at all hours. He would be less of an embarrassment when he attends meetings in foreign countries. He's also been in government long enough to know pretty much how it works. His brand of terrible would have more to do with religious "freedom" (for evangelical Christians only, of course), anti-LGBT and anti-woman legislation and other right-wing domestic issues, and, of course, tax cuts. He would be awful but more survivable in the long term, I think.

(4,407 posts)Cutting taxes to the rich, destroying the ACA, picking right wing judges, over-bloating the military and running up the deficit, all the things that are going to cripple this country for years, he would be just as bad, if not worse.
Maybe there would be no stupid twitters, name calling, and other non-presidential behavior, but on the big picture Trump is just doing what right wing republicans do.

(22,154 posts)issues is all he knows. Most democratic folks can run circles around him w/ the facts of life and what's going on in the real world. Probably would even deny climate change, and say it's what god mandated. I'd be nervous w/ him too. Very nervous and don't trust him one bit. Not one bit.

(10,721 posts)He'd be plenty dangerous. But he wouldn't command a cult following the way Trump does.
And Pence wouldn't have the same relationship with Russia or Saudi Arabia, which for Trump goes back many years and relates directly to his personal finances. That's not to say Pence wouldn't be corrupt, because of course he would be.
Had Pence been the presidential nominee in 2016 instead of Trump, Clinton would be POTUS. If the question is, would we be better off if Trump were to resign or be removed from office by the vote of 67 Senators (fat chance), of course we would be. It would fracture the Republican Party base pretty severely.
