https://www.rawstory.com/2018/10/heidi-cruz-complains-teds-174000-senate-salary-not-buying-second-home-anytime-soon/Heidi Cruz, the wife of Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), is upset that she still has to be her households primary breadwinner because her husband only makes $174,000 a year as a member of the United States Senate.
In an interview with The Atlantic, Cruz complained that her husbands Senate career has meant that hes been stuck making less than $200,000 a year for the past seven years, which puts more pressure on her to bring in the bucks.
Six to seven years in it, with me being the primary breadwinner its like, Uh, yeah, this is when people say thank you. Ill now take that appreciation,' she said. Yeah, were seven years into this, and were not buying a second home anytime soon.

It was the spring of 2001, and Heidi Nelson was planning her nuptials to the man shed met just over a year earlier. On Christmas break from Harvard Business School, shed encountered the cocky and cerebral Cruz in Austin, Texas, where they were both working on George W. Bushs presidential campaign. He was super-smart and really fun and looked like a 1950s movie star. It was love at first sight, she told me.
I'm going with James Arness, in The Thing from Another World.

(12,663 posts)With a disabled husband bringing in only $13K a year in SSDI, and for the last 16 years, me being the primary breadwinner at a salary that is well under 6 figures, supporting not only our own family, but both young grand-daughters who are living with us (as spouse's daughter's family is verging on homelessness) I know just how she feels. Growing kids and elementary school are so-o-o expensive.
No second clunker used vehicle for me to be able to get to work without car-pooling anytime soon!
We can't even afford payments and insurance on a Buddy or a Vespa scooter that will allow me time for shopping for groceries and running errands after work.

(2,895 posts)we were together so my daughter (who is quadriplegic as a result of cerebral palsy) could qualify for Medicaid. I was also able to earn money (at that time, a very small amount) as her attendant, and she also had SSI, but we live in SF (very expensive then and now!), and it wasn't nearly enough to make up for what I could have been earning if there hadn't been the income restrictions for Medicaid. (I was deathly afraid of her being without health insurance, though, given her needs.) Of course, I myself went without insurance all those years until I got it through marriage-- when she became an adult and my income didn't count for her benefits. (My attendant union eventually secured a health insurance option for providers, so that's progress.) Even in those sometimes challenging times, I know my standard of living was far better than the overwhelming majority of people in the world, so hope I don't sound like Heidi!

(14,537 posts)Net worth:
Heidi Cruz has an estimated net worth of about $4.5 million. Her primary source of income is her various role in the government. For several years, she served multiple positions during the tenure of George W. Bush as the president of the United States of America.
Ted Cruz net worth:
3.5 million
A combined net worth of 9 million. Hmmmm.

(9,696 posts)She works for, I think it was goldman...I read the article late last night She's very well paid in wall street and really wants to move back to NY.
Very touching part of the article is when she was helping ted run for president her 7 uear old daughter asked her if the first lady got paid and upon learning that it was an unpaid position said it was a "bad deal." Little chip off the old block there.

(2,955 posts)It's literally all about appearance and one-upping the neighbors. She wants to be able to talk about the amazing second house they'll be getting while she meets with the other ladies of high society. People like her are a prime example of that saying "money can't buy you happiness" It can certainly enable you to find happiness, but it will never solve core issues in life stopping you from being happy. Usually those issues are some combination of unfulfilled dreams/envy of others/unhappy home life.
Merlot
(9,696 posts)"other ladies of high society." More like she wants the high-powered lifestyle of others in her industry.
Just for kicks, the article does mention how she's redecorating their current "hovel." It also drops a lot of hints about her running for office becasue she's so "likable."

If Cruz should win re-election, just tell him to do what Republicans apparently perceive to be fiscally responsible: borrow as much as you possibly can with no intention of ever paying a cent of it back. Their president does it. Their Congress does it.

I just had a friend who lost his job recently, who had frostbite on some toes because he couldn't afford to have heat too in his small apartment.
They found him unconscious in the apartment, but not in time to save some of his toes. We are shocked and totally dismayed and upset and everything else, had any of us known we would of course helped in some ways (but he was too proud to say anything to anybody).

(302 posts)This is the reason Duncan Hunter Jr. gave for using campaign funds, because he couldn't live on 174,000 a year. Do they realize that most American's make only a fraction of that as their annual salary? A person earning the minimum wage makes less than $20,000 a year. These people are so out of touch with the reality of average Americans it is pitiful.

(3,666 posts)I don't know how expensive Houston is, but where I live, in Silicon Valley, 175K in family income would barely enable you to scrape buy. You probably couldn't afford your average 1500 sf starter home on a postage stamp lot with that income.
Truth is, we don't pay office holders nearly enough. That's one of the reason that mostly already rich people end up running for public office. Is that really what we want?
We need to stopped being so begrudging with the salaries of the people in government.
And while we are at it, we need to have public financing of elections.
Those two things would empower more people from more walks of life to consider running for office.
haele
(12,663 posts)True, not everyone was as lucky as Joe Biden, who would take the train home when he was in the Senate, but there's other places to live in the DC area other than Georgetown that are just as nice but far more affordable.
And there's always plenty of very nice "Rooms" and studio apartments for geographical bachelor legislators who want to save their money while in DC.
I work with more than a few military officers and high-level government workers who make less annually than a Senator (with all the bennies counted), and work in DC.
Oddly enough, most of the married ones have stay at home spouses to care for their kids, or spouses who only work part time to save on daycare - which is a huge expense in DC - if they don't have a nanny. And still, they live comfortably in some really nice neighborhoods - whether they've bought or are renting, and send their kids to nice private schools.
It's not about begrudging the salaries of government employees.
It's about pointing out a spouse who appears in public to act she's entitled to live like a Queen of Versailles due to her husband's position, and is more pissed because her husband gave up his rather lucrative legal and State government career to work in DC instead of acting as if being in public service with the Federal Government should be honor in itself. That's the sacrifice to be made when you've made the choice to be elected to work in DC. Perhaps she thought she should be getting lobbyist money to live on, or using campaign coffers to fund a lavish lifestyle she appears to think she should be living? If so, she really should have kept it to herself; otherwise, she just looks like a sorry married for money and fame.
Cruz is from Texas - not in a high cost state like California or Connecticut. And I'm sure they have very good credit. His salary, as much of a pittance as it is, should be enough that he can keep residence in both DC and Texas fairly comfortably, if he and his family aren't addicted to living like a Jersey mobster who just got promoted to Consiglieri. If they want a second home in Texas, if Ms. Cruz still has a job, there shouldn't be any problem at all.
Admittedly, property taxes there can be a bit high depending on where one lives (local taxes vary), but property and housing itself is still reasonably inexpensive - compared to a lot of other exclusive areas in other states.
