Trump and first lady Melania Trump submitted their 2017 federal income tax returns months after the president asked the Internal Revenue Service for an extension, CBS News reported Wednesday.
White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders confirmed in a statement to the outlet that "the President and First Lady filed their taxes on time and as always they are automatically under audit, which the President thinks is extremely unfair.
CBS noted that the IRS automatically audits tax returns filed by each president, though an audit does not prevent the president from voluntarily releasing his or her tax returns. Every president has filed his returns in some form since Richard Nixon.
Trump has drawn immense criticism since the campaign trail for his refusal to release his tax returns publicly. The president has repeatedly claimed his taxes were under audit and therefore could not be made public, though many, including the IRS, have pointed out that he could still voluntarily request his taxes be released.
Earlier this month, a bombshell New York Times report found that Trump engaged in "dubious" tax practices before taking office. The Times reported that Trump engaged in dubious tax practices that allowed him to accrue millions of dollars in additional wealth from his father's real estate empire in the 1990s.

(34,082 posts)The automatic extension is 6 months. You don't "ask" for an extension - you inform the IRS you are taking one. Your taxes are due on the regular deadline (April 15, or thereabouts), and your return is due October 15 (or thereabouts).
If you need an extension beyond October 15, you do have to ask - and obtain consent in advance.

(32,720 posts)instead of the last day. Of course, I have to make sure I take every deduction imaginable so I don't owe and have a late penalty fee. This year I used Credit Karma, which is free. Slightly less user friendly than Turbo Tax...well actually a LOT less user friendly, but better than TaxACT. I just hope it was accurate. My refund was very high right out the gate before entering any deductions.

And, this highlights it for those who are interested in that little fucking detail.
ETA to change "submitted" to "shown".

(34,082 posts)I don't believe that is accurate.
He had not publicly disclosed them, but this is the first allegation I've heard that he is not filing them.

(34,082 posts)Except that the OP headling referred to filing as submitting, so I figured I should check.

(54,415 posts)And if you file for an extension, the IRS automatically gives you six months. Since I am overseas and have to file both US and German tax returns, it takes forever to get all the necessary documents, some of which need to be translated. I'm lucky if my US accountants manage to get everything in order by October 15th, because filing my US return depends on information on the German return for the same year, which is not due until 6 weeks later.
Russ Feingold was going to introduce legislation to bring the USA in line with most of the rest of the world, and have residence-based taxation for American citizens (the USA, along with Eritrea an one other African country, is one of three nations that don't have it). Unfortunately, he was cheated out of regaining his Senate seat, and teabagger Ron Johnson doesn't even know where Europe is.

(24,259 posts)show his taxes because he's under audit (again) so he can continue to HIDE and LIE about his financial dealings to the American people that should be the real story.
If he's not hiding something big from the American people, if he's not lying about his finances to the American people he should gladly release them like other candidates, including past presidents, have and, IMO, should. INNOCENT PEOPLE DON'T ACT LIKE THIS.

He's lying about both, just as he lies about anything and everything.
