First lady Melania Trump's plane turns around after 'mechanical issue' on board

WASHINGTON – The airplane which was supposed to deliver First Lady Melania Trump to Philadelphia had to make a sudden return to Joint Base Andrews on Wednesday because of a smoke problem.

Trump's rep, Stephanie Grisham, confirmed to USA TODAY there was a "Minor mechanical issue" on the plane. She added: "Everything is fine and everyone is safe."

Pool reporters traveling with Mrs. Trump said they could see a think haze of smoke coming from the plane, and smell something burning. Staff members supplied wet towels for people to hold over their faces if the smell became too strong.

One of the crew members reported " 'a malfunctioning comms unit' that had overheated, but White House has not confirmed," said one pool report.
Trump's trip to Philadelphia for an event on opioid addiction is being re-evaluated.
