(48 posts)So how come none of their monarchical descendants have any real power anymore? That is, if the world is secretly run by those "Powers That Be?"
Did you watch Downton Abbey? How did the British Aristocracy, so well placed to ride the wind and direct various storms, how did they lose their privileges, how were the Corn Laws repealed, how was the House of Lords stripped of its veto, how were estate taxes increased so that stately homes had to be sold when one generation passed to another?
For various reasons, it makes people feel smart these days in our world to be conspiracy theorists. But conspiracy theory makes very little sense if you know facts about history.
The right-wingers believe that George Soros and other "globalists" secretly run the world. Others blame lizard people, or the Jews, or "the patriarchy."
There are no Powers That Be at least to the extent that they run the world. Your average CEO, for example, is a hard-working careerist who spends enough time worrying over his own particular corporation's next quarterly report. He doesn't have the time nor the inclination to get together with other bigwigs to try to run the world.
I knew Leopold and Victoria were related. That's the way things were back then. The fact that this is new to you is a sign to me that, like most people, your historical knowledge is limited. Let me respectfully suggest that a lack of historical knowledge and conspiracy-mindedness are natural partners.
