I voted NO on every damn one of them that was appointed by a republican. It was worth the effort.
Normally I only vote no if they've had suspect rulings etc. Not this time or ever again.

(659 posts)Looking up judges is something I rarely ever do. This time I went in pretty deep in their connections and boy oh boy do I look forward to voting in some progressives in the midterms.
I usually dig deep on all the ballot measures and stuff but always took the judges for granted. I stupidly assumed unless I heard bad they were good enough.
Back in the day when they usually followed the law that wasn't a problem. Now? No stinking way.

(659 posts)After the events of these recent years -having judges whose willing to follow the law but still acknowledge humanity in people and not having shadowy right-wing affiliations is more important than ever.

(4,613 posts)If they were appointed by one of "them" then they got a no vote. Most were appointed by Dems in my state, so most of them got the thumbs up.

(659 posts)in my secretary of state page (Michigan) for me. Most of them have a link to their webpage or Twitter account which exposes their political slant and connections pretty quickly. Other than, I just simply google them and see what comes up in local media sites.

(12,132 posts)for people on my sample ballot:
Eric Eisnaugle - republican - willget a NO from me.
Justice Alan Lawson - appointed by rick scott. (And earlier by Jeb) - NOPE.
Culver vs Krause - Krause fined and suspended for ethics violations for GOP - but I don't see anything about what party either is though I suspect Krause is GOP. She bought a table at GOP fund-raising event in violation of a rule that says not to do partisan things. She was suspended for 30 days without pay, and fined 25k$. among other things lol. I'm voting Culver there unless the third candidate Shackleford convinces me to vote for him Can;t find out much about other than he was an aviator and his website is expired.
Lemme know if you find anything good on anyone else! People at work keep wanting me to do work stuff for some reason so my googling minutes have dwindled to zip lol.

(46,739 posts)We had a "Liberal" mayor who had close ties to Republicans. I don't even know what made him Liberal. The party gets infiltrated through the business organizations.

(16,672 posts)These judges were basically as Yes/No as to whether or not to renew them. There were no endorsements for them in the info I received.
Also,, I disagreed with one of their picks. I always do my own research -even if I agree with them 99% of the time.

(9,874 posts)A judge in your state is initially appointed but then has to run for election to the post he was appointed to?
In NJ, all judges are appointed and none are ever elected.
In NC, where I live now, they run on the ballot as Democrats or Republicans, but I don't know if they are initially appointed.

(16,672 posts)From another site:
https://www.kcet.org/ballot-brief/when-and-why-we-vote-for-judges
When and how judges come to the bench varies accordingly. Justices of the California Supreme Court and Courts of Appeal are first appointed by the governor. However, at the very next general election they must be confirmed by the voters. They then generally serve a term of 12 years before coming up for re-election.
I googled each of them and found who appointed them and their general party affiliations.

(15,334 posts)In the past, Unions would organize and inform local voters on the importance of these "seemingly" inconsequential local and state judiciary races.
We need to get back to building that kind of local political infrastructure EVERYWHERE!!!!

(2,399 posts)I was looking thru the voter's guide about one of our state Supreme Court justice races. The first endorsement was from our former rightwingnut AG....and I said "Nope" on the candidate. Then I noticed that the second endorsement was from our very liberal former governor. Then the Building Trades union. Then the VERY liberal Congressional rep. And on and on. Lots of libs.
The candidate must be really good. The other candidate was .... meh...
I didn't go any further.
