My electoral dilemma and how I solved it

Some of you know that I am president of the Democratic Women's Club in my rural ruby red FL county. We are working hard to get Democrats elected up and down the ballot and we are gaining members every month.

For the first time in forever, there are Democratic contenders in just about every local race. It's been a long time project of our local Democratic party with a lot of help from the state party.

One of the contenders, for state legislature, is a retired MD who has lived in the area for nearly 40 years. He is not a strong candidate and will probably get his butt kicked by the incumbent and very popular R. Still, he's the Democratic contender.

We had him speak at last month's meeting. Again, not a very strong candidate, many of us disagreed with his stands on a few local issues. But he's the Democratic candidate.

Comes the local newspaper's political forum last week, featuring a Q&A for all the R & D nominees for each local race. Packed house. Lots of MAGAts with their hats and "Trump 2020" pins. After the Pledge of Allegiance, a whole bunch of these nitwits yelled "Amen!"

Lots of Democrats, too, something that I think surprised the others. Our Democratic candidates did an amazing job - well prepared, good answers, poised -- except for the above mentioned retired MD.

The question was about FL's Stand Your Ground law. Would you want any changes to it and what would they be? The incumbent R was, of course, just fine with it as it is.

The D nominee opens his answer by stating that he's one of the last conservative Democrats around. He states that he's perfectly happy with Stand Your Ground just as it is and is, in fact, a proud NRA member and doesn't think there should be any gun control at all.

He then announces that he is pro-life.

I, and the other Women's Club members in attendance, just about dropped off our chairs. I came home with a headache from my eyes rolling so much. After, I asked the Democratic Party folks in attendance if they had any idea. They didn't and were shocked. We all felt like this guy used us.

Found out this weekend that the local party was withdrawing its support of the candidate. The Women's Club had never endorsed him as he never requested endorsement from us.

Filling out my ballot yesterday. Do I vote for the guy or leave it blank? I thought and thought and thought. Finally, I cast my vote for him. My reasoning: if I lived in WVa, I'd vote for Manchin. A (D) is a (D). I actually felt sick doing it, but I'm a Democrat and I support Democrats.

A plus for him. I think this guy truly is a Democrat but why? I don't know.

Were it me, I would have left it blank, or written in another name. But you made the best decision that you knew how to make after careful consideration. No more could be asked of you. Thank-you for all your hard work.

it's tough, but life isn't often fair. Sounds like he'll lose, but the more D votes the better-- shows support is growing.

I'm kinda surprised that you were surprised he's pro-life. Isn't that the sort of thing that's asked early on?

Anyway, better, luck next time when you get a better candidate. (Unless he wins...)

He never got the paperwork for Women's Club endorsement. He would have had to answer that question.

It wasn't asked by our attendees when he spoke at our meeting. The questions focused on more local issues. But yes, it and gun issues should have been addressed. Lessons learned.

Most people who can stomach that position are unable to become pregnant due to age or gender.
