(32,645 posts)The purge was to bring voter registration records up to date. If your voter registration didn't match the info on your drivers' license then it got put into a "frozen" file. A lot of people who were frozen in 2016 were still allowed to vote, they just had to re-register and they were good to go.
If your photo ID drivers license says your name is "Robert E. Jones" and you're registered to vote as "Bob Jones" they will not accept the discrepancy any more. That's why those old voter registration records were purged or frozen. It happened to everyone regardless of party affiliation. We have to stop over-reacting to this by claiming that it's a nefarious plot by Republicans. Any name change or address change means you need to re-register, and then you're done.
It's not a big deal.

(1,736 posts)If it affects everyone equally, why does it happen so frequently with Republican election supervisors?
Check the egregious examples in the Georgia governor race now, the 2000 Florida presidential election, among numerous examples - Ohio recently, North Carolina too. A Google search will do the trick. Go beyond the headlines and look at the evidence cited by election watchers like Greg Palast as well as mainstream journalists. Follow the identity of the companies that are often contracted by Republican leadership to do these purges.
It's an intentional strategy which is indeed nefarious, racist, and partisan, and it sometimes results in a winning margin for the Republican candidate. To suggest otherwise is counterfactual.

(32,645 posts)... but this is winnable! We need to keep our cool and find a way to beat the RWNJs at their own game.
Then when we win in November, we get busy and change all their racist and unfair regulations.

(1,736 posts)The winning margin in some states, including Georgia and Florida, may hinge on effective responses to purging strategies, which includes re-registration when it's possible. Either way, the midterms matter.
