Why would a rich guy sleep in his office and leave his family back in the district?

Showering in the House gym, can't afford a modest apt??

Is he afraid of the non white neighbors?
Is he a day trader who squandered the family fortune?

Something doesn't mesh with this guys story.

He only says he sleeps in his office. Probably staying with a Washington love interest.

When in fact, it actually misuses taxpayer dollars. The House offices are meant to be offices for public officials and their staffers doing public business, not hotels or apartments.

In the old days, members used to rent boardinghouses in D.C. when Congress was in session. Sometimes they would roommate with other members.

For the simple reason it makes no sense.

There's more to this story. A love interest, fancy hotel where he has staff to tend his needs. Something.

A lot of house members spend as little time in Washington as they can get away with. I think the trend now is to have your home life in your district and commute to Washington. I think in the past it was more common for House members to own/rent homes in the DC area, but not anymore.

I think they often room together and some sleep in their offices.

it seems to be that they can get away with it and/or are just cheap, some 'non-rich' members just might not be able to afford a place to live even with roommates. Or have to deal with wasting time commuting and finding a place that will let them rent for x months out of the year, ie like the summer when they end the session. For just over a month they'd be paying to rent an apartment and no one would be there during the August-September recess not to mention this congress and their many weeks off/weeks on. For the rest exploiting the taxpayers is just a part of who they are, being able to craftily put the burden of their expenses on someone else is often what they see as being 'resourceful'.

The other thing with Paul Ryan, again I have to guess this is where you were going with this, is he is a fitness freak so maybe living this 'spartan' existence that keeps him 'focused' on exercising and work appeals to his ideals of who he is/should be.

Newtie's "firebrand Republican freshmen" tended to live out of their offices, and not move their families to Washington, to prove that unlike the old-fashioned career politicians they replaced, they would only serve a term or two and then return to their districts. (Some of those same "firebrand Republican freshmen" are still in Congress, though...) The Teabagger Class of 2010 is probably doing the same shit.

And now you know the real reason these people are so fucking nuts: if you don't ever leave the office, you will go insane.
