U.S. Representative Joseph P. Kennedy III headed down from Massachusetts to Texas over the weekend to help Beto O'Rouke's campaign as he challenges Republic Ted Cruz in the U.S. Senate race.
It isn't the first time Kennedy campaigned with O'Rouke in Texas, and Cruz made note of that Friday while referencing Chappaquiddick.
Video posted on Facebook in March shows O'Rourke and Kennedy driving in Texas with Kennedy behind the wheel.
According to the Dallas News, Cruz made a comment about Kennedy while campaigning in Houston Friday.
"By the way, he had Joe Kennedy down here campaigning with him. And Joe Kennedy was driving him around. I have to admit, it may be the first time in history anyone's ever asked a Kennedy to drive," Cruz said, according to Dallas News' report.
The comment appears to reference Chappaquiddick, the 1969 crash involving former Sen. Ted Kennedy, who is the great-uncle of Kennedy.
Ted Kennedy drove his car off a bridge and into the ocean off Chappaquiddick, a small island off Martha's Vineyard. Mary Jo Kopechne, a 28-year-old woman who was a passenger in the vehicle, died in the crash. Kennedy swam free and failed to report the crash for 10 hours.
Dallas News reports that Kennedy released a statement after Cruz' comment. Kennedy was in Texas Saturday with O'Rourke.
"My uncle fought his entire life to try make sure that everybody got access to health care. And you have a senator that shut down the federal government to try to deny millions of people access to health care," Kennedy said.
O'Rourke responded with, "That just says everything you need to know about Senator Cruz."
