WASHINGTON — Senator Elizabeth Warren has released a DNA test that provides “strong evidence’’ she had a Native American in her family tree dating back 6 to 10 generations, an unprecedented move by one of the top possible contenders for the 2020 Democratic nomination for president.

Warren, whose claims to Native American blood have been mocked by President Trump and other Republicans, provided the test results to the Globe on Sunday in an effort to defuse questions about her ancestry that have persisted for years. She planned an elaborate rollout Monday of the results as she aimed for widespread attention.

The analysis of Warren’s DNA was done by Carlos D. Bustamante, a Stanford University professor and expert in the field who won a 2010 MacArthur fellowship, also known as a genius grant, for his work on tracking population migration via DNA analysis.

Bustamante calculated that Warren’s pure Native American ancestor appears in her family tree “in the range of 6-10 generations ago.” That timing fits Warren’s family lore, passed down during her Oklahoma upbringing, that her great-great-great-grandmother, O.C. Sarah Smith, was at least partially Native American.

It took courage for Warren to step up and have this analysis.

If she had merely been deceived by a bogus family myth (think of how many wannabe he-men claim to "have some Cherokee blood&quot , and the DNA exam showed this, Trump would never have shut up about it.

As it is, this shows the Native American ancestor was in her family line around the time of the Civil War or maybe the Mexican War.

I hope that she did it because she wanted to know for sure. It is common lore that Oklahomans carry Native American genes. Probably not all. I went with a girl in high school whose mother was from OK. Both mother and daughter had facial features that were evidence of Native American ancestry. The mother said it was Cherokee.

A lot of people are curious about their DNA heritage, and now we have the tools to find out fairly inexpensively. I did mine this year too. I was surprised to see some Norwegian heritage, although the English, Scots, and Irish heritage were no surprise.

My father always told us about our great grand mother looked part Native American. After much work we too found that our family came to what became Canada going back several generations. We are considered Metis - part European and Native American. A DNA test showed I was .03 Native American. I wish my Dad knew all this.

Their great grandparents on their father's side were Nanticokes from Maryland.

Recently, my son did a DNA test, and to my surprise the results didn't show any native Americans.

After reading this morning's Globe article, I know why. Apparently there is resistance in the tribes to supplying DNA samples so there is nothing to compare to in DNA tests.

She was never saying that he parents, or even her grand parents were full blooded Native Americans, just that her heritage had some Native American in it, and she proved just that.
