The query sent out by officials from Savannah, Ga., was indignant and urgent.

Who did this?! the City of Savannah Government posted to its Facebook page Thursday.
This was an act illustrated by two photos: Somebody had placed googly eyes on a statue of Nathanael Greene, a Revolutionary War general buried in the citys historic Johnson Square.
From afar, the craft-store stick-on eyes were barely visible. Up close, though, they rendered Greenes monument almost comically alive.
Savannah officials seemed to acknowledge the effect, but they also try to nip public reaction to it in the bud.
It may look funny but harming our historic monuments and public property is no laughing matter, city officials wrote. In fact, its a crime.

Turns out that I'm nowhere near white enough to be outraged by this.
FACT: Googly Eyes are one of the leading causes to the decline of our ecosystem. Tens of dozens are left in unexpected places by vagrant vandals each year.
I always wanted to visit Savannah, but now that I see how unsafe it is, no thanks! Ill consider it once they catch this psychopath. Is the FBI involved yet?
In the criminal justice system, statue based offenses are considered especially heinous. In Savannah,Ga, the dedicated detectives who investigate these vicious felonies are members of an elite squad known as the Special Statue Unit. These are their stories .
Might I suggest a hashtag for this movement? #letmegooglythatforyou

Greene (for whom, btw, Ft Greene in Brooklyn is named) was thrown out of his Quaker meeting for supporting the Revolution, but it turned out not such a bad thing he supported it. He proved to be one of Washington's ablest generals and was so valuable to freeing the South from British rule that they gave him a plantation to retire on. More than one, actually, and he sold a lot of land to help pay for supplies in the war.
Great guy, eh?
Too bad he owned slaves to run his retirement plantation. Quakers, of course, disowned him. Fighting in the war was bad enough, but slaves?
Googly eyes? Why not?

(101,368 posts)She said authorities took a police report for trespass as the vandal would've had to climb over a railing.
"It is a trespassing," she said. "It is technically a crime, so we are going to be looking at the [surveillance] cameras and seeing what comes of it."
https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/davidmack/georgia-savannah-statue-googly-eyes-vandal
The railing looks under 3 feet high on Google Street View - you can step over it.
Savannah must be so proud there have been no crimes with any consequences in the city recently, such as an unsolved theft, say, that they can spend police time looking at surveillance cameras for a person who stepped over a railing from public property onto public property.
