Even over land it has a 145 wind speed and has a strong eye wall still! MSNBC says this is going to be a major disaster relief effort. It came too fast for people to get out and it isn't weakening. Cell phones, power, trees, roads are all effected. People were too broke to leave, blue collar people living on each paycheck couldn't afford gas and motels to evacuate. Also, not enough shelters are available. This country is going to be hit hard financially due to Climate Change.

I feel certain he will do all that he can for the citizens of Tallahassee.

(51,627 posts)Everyone agrees that it got really strong really, really fast. The clean up and relief efforts are where officials need to act quickly and efficiently or else they will be blamed. Of course since this doesn't involve mainly brown people like in Puerto Rico so relief from the GOP govt may be better in comparison.

(43,198 posts)So for the sake of the people living there, it shouldn't be nearly as bad as what we see in the Panama City area.
But politics as they are, I'm sure the Republicans will try to blame Gillum for everything regardless. And Bill Nelson.

(51,627 posts)They said his campaign depends on how he handles this. Mainly they will nave downed trees and power lines that are dangerous. He seems to be on top of it now, I hope it stays that way for his sake and for the residents.

He's worried, even if Polly and others like her aren't, about the wellbeing of people, especially in "unsafe structures," who heard a cat 2 arriving at shore discussed all day yesterday and thus thought they'd be fine at home. Instead, it intensified remarkably fast overnight and hurricane force winds will move far inland. Not nearly enough shelters prepared.
Brian Williams tried -- at length -- to blow off government and media failures to consider real possibilities as "no one's fault" and "a true act of God," but Honore wasn't buying it. He responded with professional restraint but said he always treated every storm as a possible cat 4.
Happy Republican government and global warming.

This storm isn't super bad with rain or storm surge (like Sandy) but the wind is the main problem. At least it is moving fast.
