How can some people, such as Graham but not limited to him, trust Trump to the extent they seem to?

Look at how he has lied to and shafted other people. I mean, do they think that it’s never going to happen to them?

...either naked ambition and cynicism--wanting to be Attorney General--or else it's simple blackmail. But I doubt very much if Graham "trusts" Trump a particle more than any of us here do.

Something happened to flip Graham into the spitting, gnashing lunatic Trump defender that he has become. I don't think he found Trump to be a great person worthy of loyal friendship. Something else happened and he is being bribed or blackmailed.

As long as you're willing to play the sycophant and completely sacrifice any principle or pride, he's not likely to throw you under the bus.

It's the people who try to work with him in the context of established norms who get into trouble. Or who try to work in their own agenda.

No fear. Just a lot of jockeying for position.

He's an extremely useful idiot for them. Look all the RW wet dreams they've brought to reality with him on the golden throne (in more ways than one.)

They had two uninterrupted years to stack the courts with Federalist Society picks. While everyone is ooh-ing and ahh-ing over the outrages of the deplorables, the alt-right, the financial and ethics scams of cabinet members, just remember that at this particular time and with this particular congress, Trump is the distraction. They are looking the other way on purpose.
