Holy Shit- 20 die in upstate New York birthday party limousine crash

<snip>

Twenty people were killed when a limousine and another vehicle crashed in an upstate New York area popular with tourists during the fall foliage season, State Police said Sunday.

Eighteen of the victims were in the limousine and the other two were bystanders, the Associated Press reported, citing preliminary information from sources close to the investigation.

The wreck took place Saturday in Schoharie, a town of 3,300 people about 160 miles north of New York City. Immediately after the crash police had said only that there were "multiple fatalities."

On Sunday, police revealed the death total but said names of the victims would not be released until family members were notified.

The National Transportation Safety Board said it was sending investigators to the site, next to the Apple Barrel Country Store and Cafe.

Liz Gallup works at the store and has lived in the area for almost 60 years. She said the crash, which she did not witness, occurred adjacent to the parking lot, and that limo apparently ended up in a deep ditch along the side of the road.

Every limo company should instruct their drivers to be strict and even authoritarian about passengers buckling up. If no one buckles up, no ride. If anyone unbuckles, stop the vehicle until they buckle.

20 people dead, each with families and friends who will be impacted. Like mass shootings, the pain of loss spreads far and wide.

I drove very carefully, and in a way designed not to make anyone even notice they were in a vehicle. Generally, the passengers are not paying any attention at all to what's going on, so nobody cares if you take your time. They're all busy enjoying the occasion. So, it's steady as you go and slow around the corners and smooth, even braking that doesn't get anyone's attention.

That's how you drive a limo. It sounds like the driver of that one was hurrying the trip. That's never a good idea.

Really, though, nobody wears seat belts in limos. That's another reason drivers need to maintain the smoothest possible driving style.

Not every limo driver, though, should be driving limos, I'm sure. Tragedy can happen anytime. It can also be avoided.

From another report: Mr. Tavenner said the site of the accident was a notoriously dangerous spot, a “nasty intersection” that transportation officials had tried to fix in the past without success. “I honestly think it was a more dangerous intersection than it was before,” he said.
