At least not with a national political issue like this. Normally one side is 100% convinced and the other side is a bit fractured, but, as best I can tell, this Kavanaugh issue is a perfect political storm. Schumer is saying he won't back down an inch, and McConnell is basically responding "we don't want you to, since this is firing up our troops." The Republicans and Democrats I talk to in my personal life are each 100% convinced they are on the side of the angels and the other side is on the side of the demons.
It's a good thing both sides to this issue don't have actual armies, because divisions like this are what leads to Civil War. All we have are the elections in a month, and the polls are too close for either side to be complacent or confidently predict victory.
All we can control are our troops. This is the time to act, like no other- donate, organize, call friends, drive sympathetic people to the polls. Make it so when election day comes around no one can say we didn't give it everything we have. Because this is as close to political Civil War as anything I've seen in my lifetime.

(4,517 posts)They are called militias and are more popular than ever. They have also infiltrated every police dept and branch of the military. Then we have a large pool of mercenaries out there who would kill their own mothers if the price was right. Not even included in those numbers are the radical Christians and white supremacist groups. Then you've got grandpa who was a war hero and wants to go out in a blaze of glory. Who is going to stop them? Do you think Trump will send troops against his base? Or do you think he will encourage them?

(90,346 posts)They all admit he's an asshole to some degree, not a good person like Obama (if they can get past Obama's skin color).
The number one excuse for sticking with him is the economy that he spiked but didn't build back up
