"What I hope people grasp is that the fight is not only about the win. You fight because it's the right thing to do. You fight because if it alleviates suffering for just one person, it's worth it. You fight because if you don't, if you let them define you, you will lose yourself."

(9,994 posts)Susan B. Anthony voted, illegally, in 1872. It took almost 50! Years for her and the women who followed to secure the right to vote. And how long have people in the Civil Rights Movement been fighting? Theyre still fighting. Read one of Bishop William Barbers books on Moral Mondays. Theyre full of how many times setbacks demoralized people, but they got back up and kept fighting. Republicans are in the wrong, and we need better ways to communicate that message. My hope is that younger people are not so wedded to hate radio and Fox News so they will not internalize the message that anything Republicans do is good.

(37,648 posts)You may not win at first, but it IS the win. That is the reason for the fight. If there were no way to win, there would be no point in the fight.
Republicans go after the WIN. Democrats need to think that way, too. It's the WIN. If you don't win, you can't do anything about the issues.

(8,203 posts)She said it isn't only about winning.
It is also about self-respect, and small wins which alleviate some suffering.
It is also about not lying down, about not learning helplessness so well that you are never able to fight again.

(18,633 posts)Being from NE Ohio I have a lot of friends who are Cleveland Browns fans. It's not enough to see the team win every Sunday, they desperately want the Pittsburgh Steelers to lose so they can drink in the sweet nectar of their tears. Many carry that mentality to politics.
I believe barstool republicans, those who barely follow the news but love to loudly opine, have no idea what a conservative agenda brings for them. All they really care about is that tree hugging Obamacare liberals are losing. Never mind that republicans screw them over along with the rest of us, they want to be on the winning side.
What can they possibly think Judge Kavenaugh is going to do for them? They don't own a telecom company, an oil refinery, or even an anti-gay bakery. A conservative SC will crush their and their daughter's dreams along with ours, but they wear that MAGA hat like a devout sports fan.
