Brett Kavanaughs nomination to the Supreme Court was approved by the U.S. Senate by a vote of 50-48 late afternoon on Saturday. One of the first organizations to congratulate him was the American Family Association (AFA), an anti-gay and fundamentalist Christian organization founded in 1978.
The AFA has long opposed what it terms the homosexual agenda.
The organization distinguished itself by attacking gay journalists in the 1990s. In the early 2000s, the AFA unsuccessfully argued in favor of keeping Texas anti-sodomy laws intact and later mounted a press campaign against the childrens film, A Shark Tale, because it allegedly promoted the acceptance of gay rights.
Aside from legal activism and advocacy against homosexuality, the AFA also supplied a series of In God We Trust posters to several public schools across the country in the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. The AFA is also sort of opposed to trans fats. In 2015, the organization repudiated the views of a former director by noting, AFA rejects the idea

(10,876 posts)Not giving someone rights that they dont yet have is very disappointing.
But, taking away previously granted rights is a whole different story.
Do the Repubs really want to go down that road.
And, if they do, will progressives take to the streets?

(6,535 posts)Sounds like a bunch of assholes. Funny about the Russia comment...I can see how there are lots of convenient intersections between fundamentalist-type bigotry and Putin-style oppression. Like these traitorous scum saying "better Russia than Hillary" or whatever, just because they identify with the homophobia, or the supremacy in the society of white Christian males in general.
Anyway, I always have to laugh about people opposing the "gay agenda;" I always think, what is their problem? That agenda is probably like:
" brunch; grocery shopping; clean apartment; go to gym..."

(53,957 posts)Like the anti Roe groups, they have lots to celebrate. There are a plethora of anti-gay bills going forward in a number of states and if they head to the SC, I will not be surprised if anti-gay legislation will get a big boost. But, it's just gay peoples' rights, so most will shake their fists, but little else will be done. My 4th legal anniversary is next month and I am seriously wondering if it will be my last. I guess it could get a grandfather clause of some sort, but I don't even think that is a strong possibility. I wonder if I will be 'splained to that there are more "pressing" issues or I am just being "hysterical" and "need a fainting couch as I clutch my pearls.".
