3. I don't think he will either

And I have a guess that Thomas wouldn't either. People think he is a partisan conservative, but he isn't. He is more of a strict originalist, much more than Scalia ever was. And in a strict reading of the constitution, the President is no more immune from indictment than any other person.

I'm not as sure as you, but I do remember Roberts' vote on the ACA. Plus, it's "his" court.

Remember, Roberts helped engineer the Bush v. Gore SC argument for Bush. Yes, Roberts saved the ACA, but that was a small concession to our side compared with the presidency.

He’ll protect Trumpass, along with the four other Repukes on the court, and say in his decision that future courts cannot refer to their decision as precedent(as long as the president is a Democrat).

Roberts is a partisan Repuke, through and through

8. "Chief Justice Roberts cares about the Court" was the best comment I heard recently...

One of the brighter pundits pointed that out -- it has to do with the Court as an institution: its traditions, its honor, its reputation. That really goes beyond the partisan politics of the moment. The same pundit opined that in order to protect the Court, Roberts might ultimately find himself cast as the new Kennedy, a conservative swing vote.

That gave me something to think about, and in my mind counts as a ray of sunshine and hope.

11. I think you're right and Roberts will become the new Kennedy, to a lesser extent.

Roberts is a conservative for sure, and I disagree with many of his decisions, but he is not a political hack. Remember, this is known as the "Roberts Court," and he does not want his legacy to be a stain.

14. One of my basic operating principles is never put faith in a republican.

But John Paul Stevens was a republican who anchored the liberal block on the Court during his last years there. I hope that Roberts will see repeal of Roe v Wade and rollback of LGBTQ rights as bridges too far. Not as sure on voting rights, but the current shitshow may influence him positively there.

My concern?

If Roberts become a vote of sanity and we don't get rid of republican majorities in Congress and ideally, Trump, Roberts will be forced out and replaced by a zealot.

I'm really concerned about the court protecting RUMP (with Kavanaugh) I feel better about this after reading some of your posts!

Also, Roberts is smart enough to understand that such decisions can go both ways. I think Alito may be, as well. I don't think he wants a Democratic president to have the kinds of powers they want to hand over to Mushroom Dick.
