How did the Democrats get rolled?

For all the chaos of the Trump White House, the GOP remains adroit at using the levers of power in our modern political system. Senate Democrats and Republicans are not even playing the same kind of game. The GOP comes to work ready for full-contact boxing while Democrats were setting up for a friendly game of checkers.

The road to Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation started during the presidential campaign. Candidate Donald Trump demonstrated his political savvy when he produced a list of potential nominees, most of whom have ties to the Federalist Society. The list was an ostensibly brazen effort to win over conservatives who otherwise might not be able to support him. Regardless of how a Republican felt, Trump had successfully defined his presidency as an avenue toward conservative courts.

He delivered on the promise right away when he announced the appointment of Neil Gorsuch to replace Antonin Scalia. The seat had been open for months since Senate Republicans refused to even meet with President Obama's nominee Merrick Garland. After Obama tried to outsmart the Senate majority by appointing someone who was so centrist and non-ideological that moderate Republicans would have to vote for him, the GOP proved him wrong. They kept the seat warm until a Republican was in the White House.

or just complete idiots , Trump won the swing states by 70,000 votes, over 90,000 people submitted a ballot with no President selected because they were butthurt about Bernie Sanders, add that to the roughly 40% of registered voters who couldn't be bothered voting and that is exactly why we ended up with a pile of shit like Trump

You can continue blaming the Russians all you want, and we republicans can continue controlling all three branches of government along with most of the state and local government because the fact is people are just too lazy to get off their asses and vote them out.

Pisses me off even more, because there is no excuse for it, people in 3rd world countries and developing nations risk their lives to vote, and here we have people who either take it for granted or believe it's too much of a burden for them to vote.

helped Trump win...you want to pass legislation or nominate justices...you have to win. Those who just couldn't get past the emails in the 16 election...put Trump in office really. Support the Democratic candidate or the GOP wins...not really difficult. I am amazed the Dems have done as well as they have given they were kneecapped in 16.

Apparently political pundits don’t believe that a majority of both houses and the executive office matter. Really you have to go through a brain transplant with a fish to believe we were ever going to stop this. Political power now drives everything. McConnell pretty much destroyed the Senate so it is no longer a deliberative body, just the house of rep with a built in GOP bent.

Who was going to stop this? Collins? Flake? If you believe that I have a bridge in Brooklyn for you to buy. Amazing how the pundits turn this against a minority party with absolutely no control over the federal government. They just love to bash us to keep the game interesting and lucrative.

All the Democrats who chose to sits on their ass instead of casting a vote caused this to happen. I'm proud of the way our Democrat Senators waged the battke, but without enough troops no battle can be won. Someone once said that the single largest threat to Democracy is an apathetic public. Too many Democratic voters are guilty of apathy and until this changes and we vote in more troops to fight our battles in Congress, expect to get "rolled" every time.

The electoral college allows a loser to win.
Gerrymandering allows politicians to pick their voters.

These are the two ingredients that are essential to the recipe of minority rule.

They know what they want and will do anything to get it.

Cheat, Steal, Lie, Rob, Commit Treason, Abandon all principles

They are all in.

It was clear as glass—nobody got played, or “rolled”. What Democrats did was fight as hard as they could, and not being a majority, lost. I expected nothing else

I used to post a lot about sexism and rape culture. I don’t bother anymore. It appears that people STILL DON’T FUCKING UNDERSTAND THIS IS REAL. It’s a driving force of our culture.

People think that an entitled white male, who was a rapey asshole in college wasn’t going to win this?

I dunno. Maybe I live in a different world.

The only way to change anything is to vote.

Gotv is a start but the infrastructure highly favors the GOP and they have worked this plan for 15-20 years

is something wrong. And it makes total sense to analyze to determine root causes and possible tactics. Merely saying we are not in charge and things will be different when we get in charge is the defeatest approach imho. Because if you still keep doing things the same way even if we take control they will figure out a way around it - a way to turn things against you

Do Democrats have the majority in the Senate? Case closed. In fact, our party has no majority in either house of Congress. We do not have a President in the White House either.

Nothing else matters, frankly, in today's political environment.

We'd better pay attention and correct that situation soon. If we do not, the system will be changed in ways that make regaining majorities almost impossible.

GOTV 2018 or give up your chances in the future!
