Uh Oh! Nunes Family Farm Uses Undocumented Workers

Tommy Christopher

October 6, 2018 3:47 am

Democratic congressional candidate Andrew Janz slammed Rep. Devin Nunes (R-CA) as “hypocritical” because Nunes fiercely supports the virulently anti-immigrant Trump — even though Nunes’ family reportedly employs undocumented immigrants.

“People want to make sure we have a congressman that is not hypocritical,” Janz told Mother Jones this week. “In this circumstance, we have one who has sided with Trump on every immigration policy, including separating families and deporting undocumented immigrants. But somehow Devin and his family don’t have a problem hiring undocumented workers.”

Janz’s comments referenced a lengthy investigative report by Esquire’s Ryan Lizza, who found that the Iowa dairy farm owned by Nunes’ parents has employed undocumented workers.

One source told Lizza that he repeatedly referred undocumented immigrants to the Nunes farm for work, and another man said he had worked on the Nunes farm for 4 years as an undocumented immigrant.

Lizza was able to uncover these details despite a campaign of intimidation that included several Nunes family members following him around town as he worked on the story. One of the vehicles that tailed Lizza even had a vanity plate featuring the name of the Nunes farm, “NuStar.”

But, here's how it works: The owners contract with a labor contractor to supply workers. The labor contractor claims that all workers are properly vetted. So, the farm owners can claim that they did not hire undocumented workers. The labor contractor "sees nothing and hears nothing."

Nobody investigates, because that is the system that is in place. ICE avoids raiding, because they are instructed to do so. The only raids occur at farms owned by people who the conservatives don't like.

It's a circular thing.

didn't the Nunes family move to Ohio? Time to arrest the people who hire illegals, instead of the hard working immigrants who are supporting families.

The same supply of undocumented workers is at work on farms nationwide. The farmers simply claim that they do not hire workers. Their contractor does. And in every case, the farm owners know that there are workers on their property who are not legally able to work. They know, but they didn't hire them, see. That's the out they have.

Devin Nunes’s Family Farm Is Hiding a Politically Explosive Secret

Rep. Devin Nunes is head of the House Intelligence Committee and one of President Trump’s biggest defenders. For years, he’s spun himself as a straight talker whose no-BS values are rooted in his family’s California dairy farm. So why did his parents and brother cover their tracks after quietly moving the farm to Iowa? Are they hiding something politically explosive? On the ground in Iowa, Esquire searched for the truth—and discovered a lot of paranoia and hypocrisy.

Devin Nunes has a secret. Nunes is the California Republican and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee who has become famous in the Trump era for using his position as a battering ram to discredit the Russia investigation and protect Donald Trump at all costs, even if it means shredding his own reputation and the independence of the historically nonpartisan committee in the process.

massive hypocrisy.

Clearly points out massive hypocrisy and corruption of politicians and immigration enforcement agencies.

It's almost a certainty that ICE is instructed to avoid enforcement in certain areas of the country where republican support is strong, therefore protecting status quo with the illegal work forces that farms and factories rely on.

It's also a certainty that many of the farms and companies would be forced to close if they lost their illegal migrant labor force and many suggest much of our food supply chain would collapse if all illegals were immediately removed.

Therefore, it appears that tRump's hard-ass immigration policies are nothing but political tools of corrupt power.

you can bet the farm that this would be a major story, even lacking anti-immigrant hypocrisy. And just imagine if it were a Clinton farm.

But nunes?

Another puke gets a massive pass on wrongdoing.

that if not already doing so, Trump's people will use the threat of an ICE raid against businesses in blue areas if they refuse to support Republican policy and candidates.

I don't trust Trump or the people he's placed in our government bureaus to not use that as leverage.....

The Republicans talk a good game, but they want undocumented people in this country just as bad, but for different reasons. They're able to take advantage of the cheap labor, knowing all they have to do is threaten to ship them back to where they came from, if they complain they're being overworked for very little pay. The only ones they want to crack down on is the ones who won't do their cheap labor, and then the people who hired them can act dumb as if they didn't know the workers were undocumented.

I worked alongside undocumented immigrants from time to time in my rural California home town. I learned to speak Spanish because of that. Eventually, I got a job that didn't involve field work, but for a time, those were my co-workers. The same system was in place then. It replaced the bracero guest worker program, which had been basically a company-store slave worker program.

The details of farm worker labor practices have changed, somewhat, but not the system itself. The goals remain the same: establish a supply of hard working people who fear that they will be deported and you get productivity at low cost.
