https://newsone.com/3830220/black-homeowner-handcuffed-video-kansas/A happy experience turned nightmarish for Karle Robinson, 61, who a police officer confronted and restrained in Tonganoxie on Aug. 19, according to the Kansas City Star. The incident, shedding light on wrongful arrests of people of color, was motivated by race, Robinson said.
If Id been a white man, you know that wouldnt happen, Robinson said on Wednesday, watching body camera video of the incident. Im being handcuffed right here on my own damn property.
Robinson was nearly finished with his move and about to take a TV into his home when an officer approached him at 2:30 a.m. that day. He asked for help, but the cop instead treated him as if he was a burglary suspect. Robinson informed the officer that he had just moved into the home and that his ownership papers were inside his place. The cop chose to handcuff Robinson and wait for backup to corroborate the mans story.
Theyre thinking Im stealing, he said. Ive been hearing this for 40 years getting pulled over, being searched. Im not going to let this go.
A second officer arrived at the home and joined the first cop in questioning Robinson. The officers then went into the mans home, found ownership documentation and released Robinson from his restraints. The incident, perhaps surprisingly, did end on a better note when the officers apologized and helped him move the TV, the video showed.
Robinson, however, filed a complaint with the police department about the incident.

How many thieves move stuff into a house?
Side note: in college (back in the 80's) I had a black friend who bought a tv from a friend and carried it back to his house. He made a joke about "black man carrying a tv" which at the time I thought was really a joke. Now I know it wasn't.

(115 posts)I hope they had a goddamn warrant to go in the house, but he was probably so scared and eager to prove his innocence he let them in. Second, he needs to sue the fuck out of that goddamn police department. JHFC this pisses me off.

Would have been so much easier to get it right the first time.

(4,079 posts)Meanwhile, white guys are shooting up schools, concerts, movie theaters, etc., murdering their families, DUI'ing all over the place, and what do they get from cops? "Afternoon, Sir." "Have a good day, Sir." "You take care, now."
This HAS. TO. STOP.

And, I'll bet at first this cop was expecting to receive accolades from his superior for what he had found...

(1,819 posts)First of all why would a robber ask the police help to move a TV? A bunch of racist cops out there.

(12,406 posts)but it was 3 a.m. and they were patrolling a neighborhood that had multiple break ins that month, and they were not rude or physically aggressive from what I watched on the video. I guess I would have made the same call in their situation, regardless whether the tv mover was black or white or yellow or green.
have to cuff the guy? Couldn't he have had the guy sit tight in view and then call for backup. How about they ask the guy for his id and do a check? And there was probably evidence that he was moving as well, maybe like a moving truck.
I wondered what would have happened if he could not produce his ownership papers. And there's no way in the hell I would have let the cops in my house, too easy for them to realize they messed up and to try to 'trump' up some BS charges or plant some evidence.
I also looked up the date -- that was late Saturday night early Sunday morning. I've helped many people move, and I will say that I might not have gone that late, but I've gone well past midnight in helping people move -- especially if you have to get the rental truck back the next morning.

(65,490 posts)break-ins. That's just the excuse the cops used for harassing a black man, like when they claim someone they're harassing "fits the description" of some nonexistent suspect in some nonexistent crime.

(12,406 posts)I was going by the video because the article was loaded with advertisements and click bait. Thanks for mentioning that. It does change the circumstances, doesnt it? I believe I would have my lawyer filing requests to see documentation of all of these break ins that precipitated their actions.
