It's entirely true that they rushed the vetting process to a criminal degree, and for God's sake, why didn't anyone think to ask her what she thought a VP actually does? But that's not all on him. And he was blindsided by what a nightmare she really was. That's what happens when you pick a candidate based on looks alone. They wanted an "attractive" (I still don't see it) woman to try to counteract President Obama's charisma. But it's his cross to bear, he know it, and I think he's doing what he can to atone for it.
