(838 posts)Calling it the presidential alert system is making me want to hurl my new phone against the wall.

(42,770 posts)Regional alerts from the federal government don't require presidential approval.
It actually makes sense.

(219 posts)And forcibly turning off Cellular, Wifi and Bluetooth
Let's see if it overrules those settings. THAT would be discouraging if it still goes through.
I will report back...

And a lot of people pretend they're back at their desks at 1:00 pm.

(16,646 posts)It's not a text message. It is a special communication feature that you can't "turn off". If the phone is off, it will just store it until you turn it on. (Unless you've found a hack, in which case, DO SHARE!)
On edit: It appears that FEMA is going to put a 30 minute "expiration" time on the message. So if you aren't connected for more than 30 minutes, the message will just "expire" and never reach you.

(16,646 posts)Well, I should say it SHOULDN'T work. Of course part of this test is to figure out if there are those kinds of "holes" in the system.

(1,406 posts)If Trump has no say in this message then it should be from FEMA.
If I pull the battery will I still receive the alert when I put it back in?
Who is head of FEMA & can we trust that person to use this system as it was intended?
Trust anyone appointed by Trump?
Nope. Never. Why would we.

(146,333 posts)I carry it when I'm out for emergency purposes. Nobody has the number, except my wife. The only calls and texts I get are for the previous owner of the number - and that was over 8 years ago.
I don't do cell phones, as a rule. I have one, but rarely use it, except when I'm travelling. My wife has one on all the time, though, so she's going to get this alert.

(7,143 posts)My phone, running Android 8.1.0, allows me to turn off Emergency Alerts (AMBER, extreme threats, severe threats, and public safety alerts). Find it under Apps and Notifications, Advanced, Emergency alerts.
I intended to try it, but forgot. Anyone else give it a shot?
