Transportation Secretary Elaine Chaos day-to-day calendars are filled with large swaths of time blocked out as private, according to POLITICOs analysis of newly released records a pattern that several former DOT officials called unusual.
In total, Chao clocked more than 290 hours of appointments labeled private the equivalent of about seven weeks vacation during her first 14 months in President Donald Trumps Cabinet, based on a review of documents provided under the Freedom of Information Act. That total does not include any private hours that occurred on nights, weekends, days marked as vacation or federal holidays.
The vast majority of Chaos private appointments occurred on Fridays frequently after lunchtime, and including nine Fridays when she marked at least five hours as private.
A DOT spokesperson explained some of the private blocks ... involved appointments that range from doctors appointments to meeting with personal friends to tending to personal needs or regularly sharing meals with her husband, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
But the department says,
"the secretary is working long and hard for the taxpayers".

(82,849 posts)But who's going to scrutinize the activities of Mrs. Mitch McConnell, valued member of the President's cabinet? Nobody in the Senate, and nobody who might do that in the House has the power to subpoena any records or compel Secretary Chao's appearance or testimony.

(46,166 posts)So I guess it's up to us to flood media with demands for information. If we at least take the House then they can schedule hearings to fact find about the vultures in various departments. They'll be busy with other work. But I look forward to the time when the blood suckers using their budgets like cash cows are on the run.

(82,849 posts)I suspect there will be a large crop of new Senators and Representatives in the new year, and they're all going to have their pet issues and agendas that they would like to get going on. Unfortunately, the Augean Stables that are now our government need to be cleaned out. Democrats didn't do this in 2006, and didn't do it in 2008, preferring to look forward to the future instead of backwards to the past.
The result was a loss of the congressional majorities in 2010, and six years of ineffectual governance, hamstrung by an intransigent Republican majority installed by minority vote. As much as these new faces would like to get going on their own program, the country desperately needs to muck out the stalls. It's not glamorous or fun, but it's absolutely essential if government is going to get back on track and start functioning more like it should.

(46,166 posts)Yup, looking forward was good for getting health care done. And that pesky economic crash helped W escape jail. It was a though time. But I still rue the fact that we didn't go after Cheney & Co. Getting away with murder (imo) made them all the stronger.
