(8,377 posts)They say it will only bite people who are 55 and younger now. They rigged the budget plan that way on purpose, of course, for this very reason.
They are banking on the selfishness of retirees ("I got mine and I don't give a shit if you get yours" and the stupidity of the younger people ("Oh the Democrats are just using scare tactics. The Republicans aren't going to kill Medicare."
And they may be right on both counts. That if what we will learn in the next 90 days.
I was with a couple of old farts this evening who were jolly about the Ryan pick. They were both on Medicare, of course. I think there are millions like this. That is our challenge.

(8,064 posts)Seniors care about more than just themselves. They will not support Ryan's plan to destroy their kids benefits.

(536 posts)I'm trying to find the article from either WRAL or the N&O quoting a 72 year old voter - not concerned about her social security or health insurance plan - "mine won't be effected" she goes on to say everyone else will have to save more. Bless her stone cold heart.
It appears that version has been scrubbed. Gee whiz

(8,377 posts)My experience is that there are a whole bunch of them who buy into the right wing stuff, completely oblivious to the fact that they depend on Social Security and Medicare.
It is an uphill battle with that crowd. But fortunately, Obama starts from a position of strength and basically just needs to pick up 1% or 2% more to lock this thing down.
Marr
(20,317 posts)deceased husband's union pension and social security benefits. She's votes Republican and was quite excited by Ryan's inclusion on the ticket. When I told her Ryan's whole schtick is that he essentially wants to cut people like her off, she said, 'well, he seems to love America. Obama doesn't'.
Politics is completely separated from policy for a lot of these people. It's just another sporting event.

(8,377 posts)By all accounts, he comes across as a nice guy. It is very easy for older people, especially older women, to think "What a nice, handsome young man he is. And so polite."
This really seems to fall right into the definition of sociopath. It is like those mass murderers whose neighbors are quoted saying, "He seemed like a pleasant fellow. Mostly kept to himself. never caused anybody any problem."
I don't equate the Ryan budget literally with the crime of murder, although the consequences of that budget are much more far reaching than the actions of any serial killer who ever lived.

(24,411 posts)...that has a large senior population--when you're entire ideology is based on killing them.
Gee. I wonder why they're skipping Florida?
OMG...this campaign is like a train wreck. They are so weak and so damaged from Mitt's last two months of utter failure--that they have to now live in a glass bubble where every interaction if glittery and full of rainbows. They know that any protest against them, any negative comments or anything less than pristine--will affect them.
I just heard on Fox News, that the reason Mitt announced Ryan now--is because Obama had created a gap that was widening--and the campaign felt that if Obama's numbers got any higher (and Mitt's sunk lower) that the situation would be unrecoverable.
They know they are still teetering on the brink of collapse.
They're playing it safe and only going to places that they consider easy.
This is just crazy. How do they expect to do well in a state that they can't even enter without a riot breaking out?

(1,726 posts)Romney made a lot of money so they feel he is really smart even if they can't understand his reasoning. Then they jump to the conclusion that the campaign polling shows that Florida is safe and it's time to go after Wisconsin. I love it being a senior citizen and all.

(8,224 posts)St Augustine is reliably red, a bit less reliable than the Villages, but still quite reliable. Orlando and the surrounding county went blue by a large margin in 2008, and was not a base of support for Scott in 2010. We will put Alan Grayson back in congress by a significant margin in 2012.
DrDan
(20,411 posts)and, though I wish not true, no way is Grayson going back to congress
You could be right about St. Augustine, however. Not really sure about the politics there.

(15,139 posts)anti Medicare and Social Security is not a winning formula. Those seniors are reliable voters and they pay attention. A fair number are going to be disinclined to support anyone who wants to tamper with their income and medical care. Granted, there are rock-ribbed Rs who will foolishly vote against their own self-interest. But, when push comes to shove I don't think the majority will vote to screw themselves - or their kids and grandkids.

(478 posts)I am 58 my wife is 54 won't be 55 until next year and a cancer survivor. We have spent a lot of years buying our own insurance Thanks to Obama we no longer have to worry about being canceled. Of course Mitt/Ryan will do away with the ACA first thing assholes that they are and the next step will be to pass Ryan nasty budget plan and more than likely take away my wifes Medicare in the future. I maybe safe but that won't stop me from fighting for all the one who will not be. Health care for all should be the law of the land only in America do we have so many stupid people who vote against not only their own best interest but also everyone else"s best interest. Sure hope the senior don't put the shaft to the rest of us. But in America one never knows. Read a articles a little bit ago that said there was only one political party in the world who was against universal health care and that would be our very stupid Republican party.

(6,539 posts)I think the reason people vote for those cowards is because it's easier than thinking for themselves.
DonCoquixote
(13,616 posts)Is because Rick Scott and his gangsters think they can purge Democratic voters off the rolls. However, instead of Rubio, who could have handed him Florida on a plate, they picked the one guy that can scare seniors, which would make it harder to explain all the chicanery they plan to do to make a false win,
