If you don't have to be a sitting rep to be speaker, and if we Blue Wave the house...

Could Prez Obama be elected speaker?
I know. It’s a “what if” question but could this happen? And would it do any good having him in that position?

I see no reason to believe Obama would be more effective in that position than Nancy Pelosi.

In practice, I imagine that if the Speaker was ineligible or refused the Presidency succession would move on to the President pro tem of the Senate.

I can't think of any reason he'd be interested in doing that...

Besides, the tradition is that a sitting representative gets that job. The House loves its traditions, so it's very, very unlikely it would change them to select someone who was not part of that body.

Essentially, what you suggest simply will not happen. Not even the slimmest possible chance of that.

How about, instead, spending your time doing GOTV work in your own district?
