Sen. Maize Hirono Rocks Kavanaugh By Telling Him That Sexual Assault Investigation Is Coming
Sen. Maize Hirono (D-HI) made it clear that an investigation of the accusation of sexual assault against Brett Kavanaugh is coming even if he is confirmed to the Supreme Court.
Video @ link:
Transcript via CNNs State Of The Union:
Sheldon Whitehouse told me, the senator from Rhode Island, told me this week that, if Democrats win back the Senate or the House, when you guys get gavels back, as he put it, there will be an investigation against Kavanaugh, even if he is a Supreme sitting Supreme Court justice.
Does that set the stage for an attempted a potential impeachment of Kavanaugh?
HIRONO: Frankly, I have such concerns about this person getting to the Supreme Court.
But, on the other hand, we know that I know that Maryland has eliminated the statute of limitations for kidnapping and for sexual assault of a minor. And I think that is still out there.
And so there may be an investigation along those lines. So, I think that this is a situation that is not going to go away. The court- packing is going on big time, with people from the Federalist Society anointed, The Heritage Foundation.
And they have spent decades and millions of dollars to lay the groundwork for people like Judge Kavanaugh and everybody else to get on the court with their very outcome-driven agenda that will not support womens right to choose, that, basically, for Judge Kavanaugh in particular, very expansive views of protecting a sitting president from either criminal or civil proceedings.
And I think this president in particular is aware of that, because you know what? His mission is self-preservation every second, minute, hour of the day.
Brett Kavanaughs Problems Are Just Beginning
The point that Democrats are making is very clear. If Republicans jam Kavanaughs confirmation through the Senate, they will be setting themselves and Kavanaugh up for the kind of investigation and scrutiny that will be ten times what they are going out of their way to avoid.
The investigation is coming, whether it comes from the state of Maryland or the House and Senate.
If Kavanaugh committed this crime, he will not get away with.
An innocent person who wants to clear their name doesnt block an investigation.
Republicans would be wise to either pressure Trump to withdraw the nomination, or reject Kavanaugh in a confirmation vote, because confirming him is going to work out worse for them in the long-term than the short-term cost of cutting him loose.

They do not care.

(2,596 posts)I read the first of those last night. And this morning, one I read on Daily Beast or Raw Story indicated that he's done terribly in mock testimony rehearsals when he's asked about his womanizing and drinking. There's definitely more to this story. The fact that they prepared those 65 women-strong letters of praise they trotted out immediately following the accusation coming to light pretty much told me they were expecting it or something pretty close to it. They also indicated in those stories that he may have had multiple affairs, but no mention about any gambling. It could be that "loan" in whatever denomination may have been to pay off a mistress or mistresses, maybe one(s) who got pregnant and need help in "taking care" of the pregnancy.

(4,066 posts)Actually, I don't want that because he'll be able to sit on some cases and cast a vote.
I still have very little faith they won't ram him through though. I think we have some fighters like Hirono and Lieu that won't let this go.

(8,200 posts)There are opinions being voiced from credible legal experts that if it was proven that he used foreign aid, especially vowed enemies, to gain the presidency than every act he passed would be nullified. This would cause a whirlwind of protestations from both the right and left and the out come would have lasting repercussions. Buy lots of popcorn if it happens.

(53,784 posts)as there is the perjury aspect that Sen. Leahy went after him so strongly with, and also there's the gambling and how his debts were mysteriously cleared up just in time for his confirmation hearings.
This guy should be nowhere near the Supreme Court, probably not the Circuit Court either for that matter.

The pairing of right-wing extremism with dishonest and unethical behaviors is NOT a coincidence. It's a normal pattern, arising in good part from the necessity of hiding their intentions from America. Of course, the institutions created by 200 years of honest and principled men who came before are also barriers to their ambitions that must be ruthlessly smashed. As they are attempting with this confirmation process.

Not because she has more "fighting spirit," but because the big issues right now are focused on women, women's rights and abuse.
We're highlighting the 4 women on our committee versus the 11 white men on the Republican side as a visual for the huge underlying differences between our parties. Our women senators are also doing most of the talk shows to try to hammer the message that we're the party of Hirona, and they're the party of Kavanaugh.

(2,596 posts)Don't you think for one second that the rethugs won't be going out en masse to the polls to keep that from happening. The Dems only chance - it's their one and only one and maybe the last one - is for everyone of voting age to go out and mark those ballots or punch the buttons for a straight Democratic slate of candidates. Every single one, from dog catcher to U.S. Senator. And people of faith better be using every single prayer they can think of to implore God that the Putin-backed GOP hasn't highjacked this election.

(10,003 posts)How many districts will accidentally get sent the wrong ballots by Republican-controlled states? And how many voters in Democratic districts will stand in very long lines because their voting equipment broke down on election day or their polls were suddently changed to a new location miles away? And how many Democratic voters will get to the polls to find that their registrations have been revoked, forcing them to vote with provisional ballots that can easily be shredded and never counted? How many Democratic voters will stand in line for hours to vote and then be prevented from voting because the poll workers refuse to honor the if youre in line at closing time, you get to vote rule? How many Republican-controlled states will allow their own voting counts to be hacked to ensure Republican wins? Republicans cheat to win any way they can. This election will be no different, and unless Democratic voters turn out in huge numbers, Republicans will succeed once more in stealing some key elections, especially for the Senate. The House races are likely too many and too difficult to change without suspicion, but the Senate races are close, and a little tinkering here and there could keep Republicans in control of the Senate. God I hate sounding like a conspiracy theorist, but my distrust of Republicans is enormous!

(22,256 posts)They are sealed and counted before they come to us.
If on election day, our scanner were to break we have a way to fix the box so the ballots go in to a different container inside the box Then we call Election Central to get a new scanner out to us, which they do. Then the judges would have to feed all of those ballots through the new scanner so they show up on the tape totals. Of course we always have an electronic machine for those who prefer to use it. I had my scanner reject the ballots one time - it was very rainy and humid. The fixit crew came right out and made sure it was working and we pulled out those ballots and fed them into the scanner
If I can not find a voter in the County online system, I call the Elections Office and have them give it a go. If they find the purged record, they can tell me why the record was purged. I would never encourage a purged voter to cast a ballot.
I honestly think that any election judge that tried to disallow folks who were in line at 7:00 pm there would be a riot. I get in line at 6:58 and watch my clock tick down. I stop letting people get in line at 7:00, get them in line and inside and they vote. I had so many in line at 7 pm in the March 2016 primary that it took until 8:45 before my last voter was finished. Long Day

(26,044 posts)...Im pretty sure either chamber can investigate.
The problem is, of course, that all the investigation in the world isnt going to remove Kavanaugh if he gets confirmed. Thats going to need 67 senators and the chances of even a single Republican voting to remove a conservative jurist and replace him with a Democratic pick is nil, even if hes sitting in the state pen on a conviction for attempted rape. My hope is that such hearings are a deliberate laying of groundwork for Democrats, once they recapture both chambers and the White House, to expand SCOTUS and appoint a couple new Justices to counter Trumps picks.

So, I think she was saying investigation does not just depend on Congress. I read something yesterday about officials in the Maryland county where this occurred being ready, willing, and able to open an investigation should Dr. Ford file charges.

(120 posts)is Turtle faces speech the other day basically saying that the GOP are the only ones who can put judges on the seats of the SC. He said in not so many words that if Hillary had won they would have held up a vacant court seat(s) for 4-8 years to avoid a liberal getting on. Of course that couldn't happen if the dems won house and senate in November and she was president. What the fuck is wrong with them? I guess the constitution and rules of law don't apply to them- the GOP has grown some big balls with Trump in office but their day is coming and its going to hurt.. I hope this POS Kavanaugh goes down and he loses everything- his possible seat on the SC, his current job and anything else that means anything to him. I 100% believe Ford and what had happened to her and we have to stop this idea that these men can get away with it and be promoted to positions of power. Pussy Grabber in Chief may have but his day is coming also. I am working with the democratic party in FL to get all the dems elected I can -starting with Gillum. VOTE people VOTE!!!

(53,410 posts)It will be a Fait accompli and they believe Kavanaugh will be their Supreme Justice for decades. It will be the final nail in their coup because nothing that gets to the Supreme Court will ever hurt them and their white asses. They will effectively set the rest of us back for generations.
The Republicans arent even pretending anymore. That how sure they are.
The only thing that can stop them now is our vote in November. If we dont defeat them our chances will be over for a very long time.

(6,110 posts)Kavanaugh will be ram-Rodded through before the next congress takes power in January.
After that we need at least 67 democratic senators in senate to impeach and remove Kavanaugh from scotus. Wil the coming election yield 67 democratic senators? Possible but not probable.
Therefore it is best to force Kavanaugh to withdraw right now before he is confirmed. A rapist like him never stops after just one attempt. More of his victims need to come forward ASAP.

(58,785 posts)I have to laugh at how our white males on the judiciary committee are stepping back from the cameras now that the riveting issue that emerged from many gravely serious ones is this attempted rape allegation. Our one black male has also retreated to the background a bit.
At least our 10 members are "only" 5 white men and 1 black man, but 4 women. We're looking like a true reflection of America compared to the Republicans' 11 white man, 3 of whom persecuted Anita Hill from this very same committee nearly 30 years ago. Wow!

What's in the hidden documents? What are the Republicans concealing from the public? Who is involved in the coverup? How long has this scheme been in the works? Where does all the money come from that fuel the Federalist Society, Heritage Foundation, Judicial Confirmation Network and similar organizations? Are all those sources legit?

He's going to get removed one way or another when all is exposed on him. Kavanaugh's chances of getting passed are now less than 5%, and going down . More to come out against him , and embarrass the kgop more, and trump. This guy is a bad candidate for any court, and may be removed from the bench when he has a lot more come out against him. Another fine example of trump claiming someone is such a great guy , and fine person who is a serial liar , corrupt, and a sexual predator too. No wonder the kgop don't want anyone to investigate kavanaugh now. Women should be disgusted at the kgop, and men too.
