It was at Cong. Jim Clyburn’s candidate fish fry early in the 2008 primary season. Eight candidates were there. My wife wanted to talk to Hillary; I was supporting John Edwards (yeah, sorry about that).
Obama was just wandering through the crowd. We shook hands and spoke for a few seconds.
The SC primary comes after Iowa and NH and often picks the eventual winner.
Keep in mind that at that time Obama wasn’t just in single digits in the polls, he was single digits in Name Recognition.
I sure regret having blown that chance to talk to the best President of my lifetime.

... or maybe it was one of the decoys. Regardless... it was always a thrill to know that MAYBE it was him.

I would give him a big hug and never let go. They would have to peel me off. I miss him so much.

Everything you've heard about his magnetic blue eyes is true!!!! He comes across in person so differently than on television. He is a very intelligent, caring man.

You are so right. He was very sincere in greeting everyone on one of his campaign stops near me even though he was quite late, as he was well-known to be most of the time. This was when he beat H.W. Bush.

Dupont circle. We all heard the sirens and all left our dinners, whatever stage, and ran downstairs to see him go by. One of the best, most exciting moments ever !!!

Felt how you feel !

Can anyone go back further than Eisenhower?
I was visiting relatives in Aiken SC in the early 60s. Aiken is about 10 miles from Augusta, GA, and when he was President, Ike used to stay in Aiken at the old Plametto Golf Club when he was attending the Masters.
We were on our bikes on a sidewalk that went by course and we saw the group with the ex-Prez. A Secret Service guy at a gate confirmed who it was.
