Reminder: There is no democratic legitimacy to anything that is happening right now.

We have a "president" who lost the popular vote by 3 million votes, and was installed in the White House thanks to the help of a Russian cyberattack on our country and the reckless actions of an overweening FBI Director.

We have a Senate in GOP hands despite receiving 11 million (!) fewer votes than Democrats in the 2016 senatorial elections. They lost the popular vote by an 11-point margin, but still control the chamber.

We have a House in GOP hands by a substantial margin of 47 seats, despite House Democratic candidates receiving almost 1.5 million more votes in 2016.

We may soon have a Supreme Court with four justices on it who were nominated by popular vote losers, including one occupying a seat that was stolen from the duly elected Democratic president.

We are ruled by a government that serves the minority over the will of the majority. It used to be that Republicans pretended to serve the majority of citizens. Now, they don't even pretend.

A few points that I want to add here:

1) Don't ever let anyone tell you that Democrats don't win because of their agenda (or lack thereof). Democrats have a clear agenda and more voters want our agenda than the GOP's nightmare vision of America. Many more. There are structural advantages for Republicans that are built into our system, and we must work to level the playing field.

2) Some of the GOP's advantages arise from design flaws in our Constitution (like the Electoral College) and some are the result of Republicans' deliberate efforts to game the system (like gerrymandering). We must make it a top priority to build public support for reforms and to pass as many as possible as soon as we regain power. The fate of the republic depends on it.

3) We need to understand that Republicans have been successful by waging a procedural battle, and respond in kind. That does not mean substantive policies aren't important. They are. But the battle must be fought and won on both fronts. For a good primer on where to begin, I highly recommend reading "It's Time to Fight Dirty" by David Faris, available here.

We can do this. We can win our country back, but only if we get wise and start working toward a system that truly represents the will of the people. Republicans have been waging a unilateral war against us for decades. Let's finally join the fight.

Pass it on.
