The Wall Street Journal is reporting that former Trump attorney John Dowd tried to use the White House legal defense fund to pay off legal fees for both Paul Manafort and Rick Gates.
According to the Journal, Dowd told associates of the president he wanted to direct money from the legal defense fund set up for White House officials and campaign aides to the lawyers for Messrs. Manafort and Gates.
However, the idea was rejected by some White House advisers on the grounds that Gates and Manafort were being prosecuted for crimes they committed before coming into Trumps orbit and the legal defense fund is only supposed to be used to pay for defendants who have allegedly committed crimes while working for the president.
Dowd did not give up on his crusade to help out Manafort, however, as he started soliciting donations from Trump associates and pledged to help fund the legal defense effort with $25,000 of his own money.
Dowd tells that Journal that he never wound up putting up his own money to help pay for Manaforts legal fees.
Upon the advice I received, I did not make that contribution, he said.

The episode was one of several that people close to the president described as concerning behavior by Mr. Dowd, who at the time was Mr. Trumps top lawyer. Mr. Dowd left the team the following month.
One person familiar with the conversations said Mr. Dowd believed such a fund would help prevent Messrs. Manafort and Gatesformerly the chairman and deputy chairman, respectively, of Mr. Trumps presidential campaignfrom pleading guilty and potentially cooperating against the president. During that period, friends of both men said efforts were under way to raise money for legal fees so the two former campaign aides could fund what was likely to be an expensive and lengthy legal battle.

He could have paid for Gates and Manafort's defense with his walking around money. No?

Clearly, this shines a new light on the already suspicious payments from Elliot Broidy and Tom Barrack to Gates in 2017...

#FLAG: Is it a coincidence that...
In July, it was revealed that ELLIOT BROIDY and TOM BARRACK had paid RICK GATES for "advice on the administration" in 2017.
Odd, because both had direct access to the administration at the highest levels.
Were they trying to keep Gates loyal?
YALL SO SCREWWWWED!!!

winner of the "Droopy Dog" Look-A-Like Contest, Dowd must feel that "only the little people" pay their own attorney fees. After all, the budget must allow enough for ostrich skin jackets!
