(53,991 posts)Homophobia is a HUGE factor. If the victims of priests were girls, there would outrage, even years later. When it comes to sexual assault and rape, there are many factors which come into play. There is no denying how certain rapes and sexual assaults are treated and believed based on the victims and the attackers. Circumstances always play a part in the narrative.
As horrible as Dr. Ford has been treated this would play out, as it did with the death threats and shaming, if "she" were "he", Dr. Christopher Ford (male). would be receiving the same, if not possibly worse, treatment.
The "lesson" we all need to take away from this, as well as the Anita Hill assault and the MULTITUDE of child assaults at the hands of priests, is ALL victims need to be heard. It isn't a competition. The hypocrisy we are seeing is coming from all angles. A boy raped by a priest is no less a victim than a female teenager sexually assaulted. A sex worker is no less deserving of justice than a person who was dressed "provocatively". A teenage boy who is "seduced" by a female adult is just as much a victim as the reverse. A gay man who is raped by another man wasn't "asking for it" or not "really" raped because "you can't rape the willing." A straight man who was molested by a gay man is no less a victim than a gay man molested by a woman one.
What we are witnessing is a fucking travesty and an assault on the American ideal, but, at no point, do we need to create a "hierarchy" of victim(hood).

(10,437 posts)more powerful IF other women step forward to echo same charge against Kavanaugh. IF kavanuagh was (is) a sexual predator, there should be the possibility of dozens of females stepping forward. So far, none have.
Believe me, I am not defending the POS kavanaugh in any way, but you have to be realistic with what is going on here

(50,310 posts)hidden attacks in their past. An 82 year old lady from Texas called the Washington Journal yesterday morning and she was furious. She related a story about an attack when she was a little girl that she never told anyone about. It brought back an incident from my high school days I've never talked about. Fifty years later I googled his name and got a little satisfaction when I learned he was dead. We get past it, but we don't forget.

(52,166 posts)It took decades for victims who came forward to be believed. Stories about priests doing this date to the 1950's with nothing being done for decades and decades. Boys started publicly coming forward in the 1980's and we heard all of the same nonsense then as we are hearing about Dr. Ford now. Mary Ann needs to pick up a book and lay off twitter.
