I would disagree with General Hayden.
They should not quit or resign - they should make Trump fire them. They would be standing on solid ground, protecting our national security.
Also, Trump would prefer they resign because he does not like to fire anyone.
Furthermore, this would send a message to Robert Mueller. Everybody expects Trump to dump Sessions after the mid-term elections. When that happens, there is a direct threat to Mueller, himself. Rod Rosenstein will no longer be his boss. It will be the new Attorney General appointed by Trump. He/she will be more than willing to do Trump's dirty work and get rid of Mueller and the Russian investigation.
Let's hope that our Justice Department stands tall in this crisis.

(31,261 posts)Then he can install two people who will immediately fire Mueller.
We really need to got in force and strategically in November, because if Democrats don't take at least the House, our democracy is dead. If republicans retain Congress, Trump is going to go apeshit and there will be NOTHING to restrain him.

(17,399 posts)It is not a cop-out by any means, it is an incredibly courageous act and strong message.
For instance in the Saturday Night Massacre Nixon did not fire Richardson or Ruckelshaus, they both resigned rather than carry out his order to fire Cox.
