You know faux news would be crapping all over themselves if this was Obama.

(32,077 posts)The government is testing emergency preparedness. So what? If you don't want to participate you have to use a hammer to destroy your phone. Not a regular hammer. Only a sledge hammer will work.
Yep. Some of the reactions here remind me of the right wing hysteria claiming that a planned military exercise during the Obama administration was really a cover for a takeover of Texas.

I, for one, am not looking forward to having his rants, tantrums, and other propaganda forcibly penetrate my phone. You have his Twitter feed for that, if that's what you're into.

(81,871 posts)They call it "presidential alerts" but really they are alerts about important safety information.

(1,926 posts)Trump isnt texting everyone. Nor is this something trump demanded. It's an emergency alert system being tested since not every one listens to the radio or watches TV all the time, but many, likely the vast majority of people have their cellphones on them at all times. The law for this was passed in 2014 or 15 and its original basis was likely the post 9/11 modernization efforts for emergency communications.

(1,926 posts)Trump had nothing to do with the creation or implementation of this system. The wheels for this was already in motion before the election.

(12,437 posts)Trump is self centered, narcissistic...this called a Presidential Alert...he always looks for secondary gains for himself in all he does...this maybe benign but Trump is never benign...this goes to everyone...we already feel violated by him on a daily basis...our feelings of nausea are validated by the offender in chief.

(42,759 posts)Or do you think that every law that gives the president authority to something should now be repealed?
We complain, justifiably, when FEMA fucks up. Here they actually are carrying out a statutory mandate to test a required alert system and now some are complaining about that.
There are actual things that Trump has done that we should be focused on, not shit that he hasn't done.

Launch the Settings app on your iPhone.
Tap on Notification Center and scroll all the way to the bottom.
Under the Government Alerts section, toggle the AMBER Alerts or Government Alerts option on or off to enable or disable them.

(34,137 posts)There is no "Government Alerts" section but there is a Notifications Settings were I can set the ringtone and volume as well as silence them.
I'm glad this came up - my phone randomly sounds off for Amber Alerts and for weather notifications.
Amber Alerts are useless on my phone - so far there has never been any information provided with the alerts, not even the county or state much less information about the missing child or the person who may have taken them. When I have gone to the Amber Alert website I have never once been able to find out any information, usually I cannot even find an alert to match the timing of the one on my phone.
Since I am seldom on the road or anywhere I might be a witness to provide information on a possible siting of a taken child - even if I could find out the information to identify that child - Amber Alerts to my phone are worthless and annoying.
While weather alerts might be useful, they really are not. If I am at home, I have access to weather information either on my TV or on my computer. Since I ran a farm for decades I keep track of the weather anyway. If I am on the road I have visual cues to alert me and if the weather looks dangerous, I will check on it. The weather alerts are not consistent so I would not rely on them for warning of severe weather. That could be because I don't get a usable cell signal at my house, but again that makes them worthless and annoying.

(11,949 posts)You are falling for hyperbole.
The old Emergency response system does not really work because few people watch network TV or listen to real radio.
This was passed by an unanimous vote in Congress and signed into law by President Obama.
