If your Republican friend is having their happiest day of the campaign year today...

Point out the real skinny on Vice Presidential candidates:
Historically when a VP pick is seen as the candidate's hero or savoir for the "ticket" that campaign is destined to lose.
Party does not matter.
If you don't believe me you can ask John McCain and John Kerry about it.
You can also ask Bob Dole about Jack Kemp.
Or Walter Mondale about Geraldine Ferraro.
These "game changers" never win.
Regional or "party-unifying" VP candidates who were opponents of the candidate from the primary win.
GHW Bush for Reagan.
Gore for Clinton.
LBJ for JFK.
Mondale for Carter.
Biden for Obama.
In the last 8 years the happiest days of both political parties campaigns were the days their candidates picked Sarah Palin and John Edwards to run with them.
Yeah.
So tell them to pop that champagne.
Eat, drink and be happy.
This is their "day".
