This administration approved about 10% of what was requested. It will be interesting to see what gets approved after Florence.

People w/o flood insurance were out of luck. FEMA gave out (eventually) some money, as did the Feds (which was distributed by corrupt Christie). Some people tore down the Sheetrock and siding and just “fixed it up” but they have serious mold issues. Most just walked away and never came back. It was between $30-50,000 just to raise the homes, and that pretty much what the insurance paid out, so people living without much savings (which is pretty much the whole town) could get their flooded and battered home raised 12 feet, but then couldn’t afford to fix it. Once the homes are foreclosed on, most new people are knocking them down and just starting from scratch. Those FEMA and Fed Govt funds take a long time to come through. Most people have gone through the foreclosure process by then.

When the house I had been renting was flattened in 1995 hurricane, FEMA tracked me down to another little town where I was staying with a friend, and insisted on giving me money.
The only requirement was it had to be used for housing.
I had a good job, could afford to find a place, but few rentals exist in this area, then and now.

I used the 1200.00 as a down payment on a small house. Housing is real cheap here.

Thing was, I had never filed a FEMA claim. I did have to fill out paperwork when he gave me the check.

I miss our country.

Here, it often came down to who you knew and how wealthy you were to get the federal money from Christie. He gave Sandy money to Democratic mayors who endorsed his second election, even though Sandy completely missed them. The elders in my town were angry. They voted for Christie religiously, but they are poor. He cared nothing of them. He finally came about a year later, with half of our school children still living in seedy motels in a Seaside Heights and Atlantic City (rebuilt quickly due to revenue, which I do understand) and the elderly in mobile homes, regular campers, tents, also motels, and their kids. I was disgusted that the town paid to quickly repair and paint the community center where we was to speak. I wanted TV shots of holes in the roof, mold climbing walls, etc.where our kids are supposed to go to play and our town is supposed to hold meetings. But they did a quick fix. Not surprising with 80% Christie voters. What DID surprise me were the signs! Those old people know how to protest: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN? IM STILL HOMELESS! I’m 85 and LIVE UNDER A TARP! SHAME! This town voted you in and you looked the other way! And on and on. They weren’t allowed in the building, so the building was fairly empty with quiet applause. (We are polite people.) But you’d better believe the TV Crews hung out outside and spoke to the people. People in their 70s to 90s saying they have never voted Dem is their lives, but NJ would NEVER see another Republican Governor. I didn’t go. I was teaching then and he lied about our schools and teachers constantly. I was so angry with both situations that I thought I might get myself arrested, but I watched it live on TV. I don’t think it was what he expected. lol! So, sometimes, there is only so much FEMA or Feds can do if the governor is insisting on getting his grubby paws on the money.
