If President Barack Obama wins re-election, it won't be because he ran on his stellar stewardship of our glowing economy. For Obama to win, he needs a way to convince voters that the alternative, Republican Mitt Romney, would be worse.


And Romney aided Obama's cause with his selection of Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as a running mate. Until now, Romney's been short on specifics and has changed his positions constantly. He's been evasive and tough for Obama to pin down. Not any longer.


Paul Ryan's infamous budget plan gives Obama a fat, juicy target. It gives Obama a way to crystalize his Romney's-only-for-the-rich message. Ryan's plan would deep- six health care reform and dramatically alter Medicare and Medicaid while cutting taxes for the rich and for corporations, according to media reports.


Obama couldn't have asked for a better running mate for Romney.
