Driving from Eastern Tennessee to Asheville, NC. this morning I witnessed a seemingly endless armada
of fire trucks towing boats from every city and town in the region. Bucket trucks, rescue vehicles of every type imaginable.
All heading east. On the return trip in the afternoon, there were even more!
I don't envy the hard work ahead for those folks, but it sure made me proud to see so many preparing to do what they can.

(14,947 posts)When I see the repair crews heading to disaster areas and note that they are coming from neighboring states I always feel really happy. If we arent here to help each other and ease the pain then really, what is the point?
Always good to see the helpers.

(2,042 posts)I was amazed at the fire and police vehicles from all over the western states.
It made me weepy and at the same time it really does make one feel better to see all the helpers.
Most people are good and kind and want to help each other. Grateful...

(279 posts)I'm close enough to the area where if the area is impacted enough I could possibly be asked to head down there to help out. I thought about it and if asked I'll go. Last time I did a gig like that it's a 7 day/week for a couple months. It's awesome and terrifying at the same time just how much mother nature could care less about our structures and tear them to pieces.

(15,553 posts)and I can tell you that those who did were extremely appreciative and grateful for all the linemen, etc. that came down to NC from states like Ohio and Michigan, etc. It wasn't just the neighboring states.
You are exactly correct that Mother Nature will show humans in many ways how she cares less about humans' structures. Maybe she's trying to tell us something????

(12,265 posts)Just like farmers all show up when one is hurt on the job, or dies. We woke up once to 12 combines and 20 trucks to bring in the crop. Americans are good people when we remember how to be good neighbors.

(17,438 posts)Or on I-40 from Knoxville? I-26 around Johnson City is my old stomping grounds.
One of the most beautiful drives on the whole interstate system.
Also one of the most expensive to build and maintain as it's cut through a lot of limestone.

(67,819 posts)They are in many ways the best of America.
Some years ago, here in the mid Atlantic, we were devastated by a Derecho storm. There were power line trucks from seemingly everywhere.
Same when Super Storm Sandy hit further north. For that one, which we escaped, our trucks were seen heading up that way. Convoys of them heading up I-95.
