OMG. I just saw a woman being interviewed on CNN who is staying put with her 6 dogs

even though she lives in an evacuation zone. She "feels safer" at home, even though relatives have offered to take in her and her dogs. She said that one of her dogs is afraid of men, so she doesn't want to "stress him out." Well, lady, what the fuck do you think hours and hours of hurricane force winds and possible drowning will do to him? And two of her rescue dogs are hurricane dogs.

She started out the interview lying, saying she didn't have the "resources" to evacuate, then two minutes later she said she had offers from relatives and friends to evacuate her and her dogs. She can risk her life if she wants, but it infuriates me that she's risking the lives of those helpless, innocent dogs because she doesn't want to evacuate.

I hate willful ignorance.

But she's an asshole for doing this to her dogs. I have ONE dog. ONE. A Maltese. They are going to be terrified in this situation. What she's doing is cruel to them.

At least send them off with people she knows.

And yes - if I was on the Titanic and was able to smuggle my dog on a boat - I would. Uncle Ruckus would be safe and I'd float on a door.

Doesn't matter their weight - it's a lot to manage. I have one little 10 pound dog (okay 12 - but he's got a good treat face game) - I can hold him and calm him. There's no way she is going to soothe that dog.

Understand - when we got hit by the N'oreaster this year and lost power for a week - our painted back turtle had this crazy lady boiling water on the gas stove and mixing it with tank water (in and out for several days) to keep him warm.

Rescued turtle or Autocratic Little Monster -doesn't matter. They don't ask us to live with them - we make them live with us. We owe them.

I don't know all the stories or all the excuses. Some people may be crippled by agoraphobia, and leaving home is more terrifying to them than a massive Cat-3 hurricane. The devil one knows and all that. Others may be physically impaired and moving just isn't in the cards. They may be financially impaired - no car or other ready transport out of the danger zone - and too embarrassed to acknowledge that publicly. They'd rather take their chances with the storm than admit to everyone that they're broke.

As I said, I don't know anyone's particular individual circumstances.

What I do know, though, is that some folks with the ability to evacuate but who are on the fence about evacuating or staying may be persuaded to stay by watching others who are staying. "Maybe it's not that bad, after all." I'd prefer the news people not publicize the stories of people who are staying put.

The part of the wave that you see is only the top half. The lower half is under water which is why the wave collapses when it encounters shallower water.

Still, a ten-foot to twenty-foot wave crashing into your beach house is going to leave a mark.

First Responders go in FIRST after it is safe for them to go out. They do not rescue during the storm. If you are trapped or in trouble that is on you until the weather improves enough for them to safely venture out. Even then the danger is enormous from things like downed power lines and unstable structures.

There is a reason for early evacuation. Heed the warnings or you could get trapped or worse.

31. Moral hazard
Wed Sep 12, 2018, 03:53 PM
Sep 2018

This is the unfortunate reality of risk and what is often described as the "moral hazard". Truth is, if you were betting, the odds are "with" her. Remember, that just means better than 50/50. People play black jack where the odds are closer to 40/60 but they play anyway. The majority of idiots that choose to stay will survive. Ultimately, they may never choose to do so again. But people live through a Cat 2 or 3 and that's where the hazard starts. They don't understand how much worse this storm is. This is a 4. Worse, it is a 4 that will linger. Even if it falls to a 3 at landfall, it will dump ALOT of rain on the area. It could literally be a couple of days before crews can get in. They won't sent them in until the winds fall to about 40 mph. A cat 3 that lingers is still WELL above that.

The 3000 that died in Puerto Rico from Maria were mostly well after the storm passed. This woman's danger is as much AFTER the storm as during. And honestly, people should leave not because they are in danger. They should leave because, after the storm, mostly they are a burden. A burden on the infrastructure and the workers that will have to move in and restore things.

Natural selection with "stupid" or "stubborn" as a negative survival factors? I believe Darwin Awards take this into consideration. It's tragic that her dogs, if not evacuated, will suffer the same fate as ultra-stubborn (Mount St. Helens) Harry Truman's cats.

But — without watching the news story — I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that she’s beyond child-bearing years. So that factor may have already given the chlorine shock to that corner of the gene pool.

So now, I’ll hope that the dogs’ instinct for self-preservation kicks in and they survive. Even if they end up gnawing on her bones to survive the aftermath. They don’t deserve this!

There's a lady in Carolina Beach, NC who has three little girls who refuses to leave because it will be inconvenient trying to get back to her house after the storm has passed

I don't care if she wants to be an idiot but she shouldn't subject her young children to that kind of reasoning

https://www.rawstory.com/2018/09/woman-nc-coast-tells-msnbc-shes-not-evacuating-kids-theres-strength-numbers/

Katie explained that she was refusing to evacuate and instead was planning to “just try to stay safe during the hurricane.”

“I think we are going to do everything normally,” she said.

“Why the decision to stay and not fall back further inland?” Sanders asked.

“From my experience, getting back into town after the storms is very difficult,” the Carolina Beach resident insisted. “Knowing that our family and friends and our home are all here, we didn’t want to leave them unprotected for a prolonged amount of time. We are going to try to stay put.”

“We have several neighbors saying put,” she added. “We feel there is strength in numbers. We checked in with one another. We are going band together and make it through.”

It was not immediately clear from Katie’s remarks how “strength in numbers” would protect her family from a Category Four hurricane.

I imagine right about now, they are informing those that are staying to write their personal information on their arm with a sharpie. (The thought has always chilled me).
