Wave heights to 83 ft were measured early this morning by satellite altimeter under the northeast quadrant of Hurricane Florence. These enormous waves are produced by being trapped along with very strong winds moving in the same direction as the storm's motion.

(31,261 posts)The waves remind me of a movie that I watched once, giant fragments of a blown up asteroid hit the earth and created enormous waves that went across most of the USA, people that got to high mountains survived, in addition to chosen people that were housed in a special facility.

(14,732 posts)I hope you are are safe and secure somewhere far away from those waves.
The people not evacuating thinking they are going to ride this out really should re-think that position...and start packing the vehicle.

those people staying behind to "weather the storm" are fucking morons or they have a death wish.

(63,221 posts)going to "hunker down" and brave the storm. It's a stupid thing to do and they are going to pay for it. Unfortunately, the children don't have a choice in the matter. They will end up suffering for their parents' stupidity and stubbornness. I hope by some miracle they survive.

(2,419 posts)for a long time. Across open water with 140+ mile an hour winds. Pushing water in front of it like a snow plow. Its going to have a monster storm surge with very large waves on top of the surge. Looks like it is forecast now to make a turn to the southeast just before land fall, right at the coast. That may hopefully mitigate some of the surge impact, but the NC coast is going to be in the right front quadrant of the storm (where the strongest winds and heaviest rain are) for more than 24 hours.
