General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsFor the people who hate FB because it's full of pictures of smiling people,
people on vacations, etc. -- there is another option. Fill your page with things you WANT people to know about.
You can divide your Facebook friends into groups, and post different things for different people. Most of my posts in the DT era have been political or issue related (climate change, civil rights, etc.) -- and I post them to everyone on my friends list. But when I do post pictures of my grandchildren, for example, I only post them to people I know well -- like relatives, former classmates, and other trusted friends.
I don't make many public posts, but when I do they are links to articles from MSM, on issues of national importance.
Also, when I see somebody post something false, I'll send them a link to Snopes or Politifact (sometimes a private message, sometimes public, depending on the situation.) Most of my friends wouldn't purposely post something untrue, but it's easy to get fooled these days.
Does it make a difference? I don't know. But I've had one high school friend, who lives in a southern state and has a job that connects her with many people every day, write to thank me for my posts. She says she gets some of her news every day by going to my FB page. It's like I'm her "Raw Story," LOL. I hope that there are others who sometimes learn things on my page that they might have missed otherwise.
I'm just a drop in the bucket, I know. But if anyone else wants to add their drops, it couldn't hurt.
And at the same time you can check out your nephew's wedding pictures, or you uncle's cute new puppy, or whatever.

(38,958 posts)Updates from museums, libraries, hobby groups and information on labor issues such as the recent push back on Right to Work here in Missouri. There are those who dislike the service, but it works for me.

(24,259 posts)I don't use my full real or totally correct personal info there either. I hide ads and if an app wants to access my Friend list or private info it's blocked. I also use the FB (fluff busting) Purity app to control what I see when I'm on my laptop/PC. If I don't want you to find me there, chances are very good that you won't.
I'm not thrilled with FB for a number of reasons but it's a tool that I use for free. It has orgs, businesses and groups for interests I belong to, enjoy and that I help others on. It's also the only way I'm in contact with some of my family and friends so until someone comes up with a decent alternative to it, one where those I want contact with will go, I'm there.
