It's like this.

Let's say that flipping someone the middle finger originally meant "I love you". As a gesture of love and kindness, people would flip each other the middle finger. And let's say that all throughout history, this was the case.

Then, some shitty group of people comes along. They start flipping the middle finger to people, only with a wink and a nod to each other. They use the gesture in sort of a sardonic manner. The flipping of the bird has now been appropriated by this group of shitty people. The rest of the world is not quite sure why these assholes keep flipping people off, because they are obviously shitty people who do not generally go around signally "I love you" to other people.

Over a period of time, people start to question what flipping the bird really means, and the shitbirds continue to wink and nod and smile sideways at each other while flipping people off. Eventually, the middle finger does not mean I love you anymore. It means "fuck you".

White supremacists have appropriated the A-OK gesture. They flash it to troll, and to create doubt, and to be smart asses. It doesn't matter that it initially did not mean "White Power". It does not matter how it is defined in writing somewhere. What matters is how it is being used. In my way of talking, it is being used by shitty people, some of who are actual white supremacists, to "bust balls". To make liberals cry. To signal to other shitty people. To troll.
