The Republican Partys deep-pocketed political spenders are stepping up to prevent the once unthinkable: a U.S. Senate loss in deep-red Texas.
A pair of GOP super PACs are dropping significant sums into the Lone Star State as Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) faces a challenge from Rep. Beto ORourke (D-TX) thats become far too competitive for comfort. As a reflection of how realif still unlikelythey are taking the threat of a Cruz defeat, the sums spent have suddenly skyrocketed.
Independent spenders have dropped about $890,000 in support of Cruz or in opposition to ORourke this year, according to Federal Election Commission data. Nearly two-thirds of those expenditures, about $560,000, came in the eight days prior to Sept. 6, according to a review of campaign finance data.
The spike in independent expenditures is a tacit recognition of Cruzs vulnerability. White House budget director Mick Mulvaney privately acknowledged that reality last week in comments to donors, first reported by The New York Times.
Theres a very real possibility we will win a race for Senate in Florida and lose a race in Texas for Senate, O.K.? Mulvaney said. I dont think its likely, but its a possibility.

(58,694 posts)The key is to get the independents and non-voters out to the polls. Beto looks like he's on a roll right now.
In one way, we've already won one thing. Repubs are having to spend money in places they didn't use to have to. Not sure they'll run out of money, but we can get them to spread it more thinly around the country.

(41,990 posts)Even in Texas people under 40 use Twitter a lot. Even the old folks use FB. You can pass along a whole lot of publicity for nothing.
And I do think, possibly wishfully, that Beto has a shot at this thing. There are an awful lot of people in Texas who arent happy with the way theyve been treated and portrayed.
